Navy Places Fourth at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ???The Navy wrestling team had 10 wrestlers place in the top-six in their respective weight classes, leading the Midshipmen to a fourth-place (99 points) finish at the 2001 Navy Classic. Finishing ahead of the Mids were Purdue (131), West Virginia (125.5) and Virginia Tech (108.5).
Leading the charge for Navy was senior All-America Mark Conley (Exton, Pa.), who scored a first-place victory over West Virginia?s Shane Cunanan in the 141-pound weight class by a score of 8-3.
Steve Kovach (Jr./Parkerburg, Pa.) placed second in the heavyweight class after narrowly falling to Purdue?s Jake Vercelli in the championship match, 2-1, while Thayer Paxton (Fr./Meyersdale, Pa.) finished fourth in the 184-pound weight class.
Mike Bigrigg (Sr./Santa Ana, Calif.) (197), Jim Letchford (Jr./Marlton, N.J.) (174) and Adam Bones (Fr./Placentia, Calif.) (157) all posted fifth-place finishes in their respective weight class, with Bones topping teammate Michael Carbonaro (So./Blairstown, N.J.) in the fifth-place bout.
Picking up sixth-place points for Navy were Mike Simon (Jr./North Canton, Ohio) (133), Pat Lukanich (Fr./LaGrange, Ill.) (149) and Luke Lazzo (Jr./Rochester Hills, Mich.).
?We definitely showed improvement over last year?s tournament, but we lost way too many one-point matches,? said Navy second-year head coach Bruce Burnett. ?We have the ability to compete against top national programs, but we need to win those one-point matches before we can do so.?
Navy will next wrestle Dec. 2, when they travel to State College, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open at 9 a.m.
