Aztecs Hold Off Navy Rally

A Jamey Cox three-point field goal with 1:50 left in the game broke a 66-66 tie and helped San Diego State hold off Navy's women's basketball team, 73-69, Sunday afternoon at Cox Arena in San Diego, Calif.
Navy (2-2) trailed 66-59 with less than three minutes to play when Courtney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) hit a field goal and a three-pointer, then Alison Luchinger (So., Lusk, Wyo.) made an inside shot to tie the game with 1:14 remaining on the clock.
On the ensuing Navy possession after Cox drilled her sixth three-point field goal of the game to give the Aztecs a three-point lead, Davidson was whistled for a loose ball foul, her fifth foul of the game. Claire Swinbank went to the free throw line where she made one of two free throws to give SDSU a 70-66 lead. Navy's Maile Shimoda promptly hit a three pointer of her own to cut the score to 70-69 with 36 seconds left in the game.
San Diego State worked the shot clock down and Atim Otii made an inside shot with 10 seconds to go to give the Aztecs another three-point lead. The Mids pushed the ball down the floor, but Abi Campbell missed a three-point field goal with five seconds to play that would have tied the game. Navy immediately fouled Ashonda Williams to send her to the free throw line with 4.3 remaining. She missed both free throws, but Otii grabbed the offensive rebound. Otii was fouled with 2.3 seconds left and made one of two free throws to seal the Aztec victory.
"We played well," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "We did a nice job coming back from several large deficits, but we didn't do a good enough job of boxing out, especially on their offensive end. We let them get too many offensive rebounds at crucial times and it cost us."
San Diego State (2-2) hit a school-record 11 three-point field goals and grabbed 17 offensive and 40 total rebounds, while Navy made six three pointers and recorded 32 rebounds. The Aztecs converted eight of 17 free throws, while Navy was seven of 10 from the foul line.
Davidson led all scorers with 22 points, while Bryanna Herring (So., Columbia, Md.) scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Mids will be back in action Wednesday night when they play at Towson in a 7 p.m. game.
