Navy Loses Close Game at Towson

Navy's women's basketball team committed 24 turnovers and scored just four points over the final-four minutes of a 55-54 loss to Towson, Wednesday night at the Towson Center.

Navy's (2-3) offense never seemed to find a rhythm throughout the game. Navy entered the game averaging over 70 points a game, and its season low was 69 points.

After Towson held a slim lead for most of the first half, the second half became a see-saw affair featuring 11 lead changes and seven ties. Neither team was able to take control of the game, with four points being the biggest lead of the second half.

Navy jumped out to that four-point advantage at 52-48 with 3:18 left in the game on back-to-back field goals from Bryanna Herring (So., Columbia, Md.). Towson (1-3) would score the next seven points and took a 55-52 lead with 52 seconds left on a free throw from Jackie Richardson.

Alison Luchsinger (So., Lusk, Wyo.) hit a field goal to draw the Mids to within one point with 36 seconds left in the game. Navy fouled Mia Chapman six seconds later, but Chapman missed both free throws. Navy hurried the ball down the floor but was unable to convert on several scoring opportunities before time ran out.

"We didn't take care of the basketball tonight," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "You can't turn the ball over 24 times and expect to win."

Navy outrebounded Towson, 42-28, but forced only 13 Tiger turnovers in the game. Navy connected on 14 of 16 free throws on the night.

Herring led all players with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Courtney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.

Navy will be back in action Friday when the Midshipmen play at Albany.
