Men's Hoops Loses at The Citadel

Navy shot just 25 percent from the field in an 83-47 loss at The Citadel, Thursday evening in Charleston, S.C.

The Bulldogs shot 55 percent from the floor and made 14 of 16 first half free throws to take a 48-24 halftime lead. The Citadel continued its strong play after intermission, eventually taking a 78-34 lead with just over five minutes left in the game.

In addition to an off night shooting from the floor, Navy made only 15 of 33 free throw attempts. The Citadel shot 48 percent from the field and made 26 of 31 shots from the foul line. The Mids totalled 23 turnovers and grabbed 37 rebounds, while the Bulldogs turned the ball over 18 times and hauled in 48 caroms.

The Citadel's Travis Cantrell connected on six of nine shots from the field and made a trio of three-point field goals to lead all players with 20 points on the night.

Navy was led in scoring and rebounding by Taj Mathews who recorded a career-high eight points and six rebounds.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 on the early season, while the Midshipmen slipped to 1-4.

"The Citadel came out and did what they wanted to do tonight," said Navy head coach Don DeVoe. "We allowed them every opportunity to run their offense and played into their hands."

"We were on fire tonight as we came out with great intensity and enthusiasm," said Citadel coach Pat Dennis.

The Midshipmen will continue their tour of the Carolinas Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. contest at Davidson.

"We lacked intensity, but tomorrow's a new day and Saturday we must be prepared for Davidson," DeVoe continued.
