Mids Hold Off UMES; Advance to Classic Championship Game

Kate Maslowski scored six of Navy's points during a late second-half 16-3 run to spark Navy to a 67-54 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore, Wednesday night at the Navy Classic in Alumni Hall. The victory advances Navy to Thursday's championship game of the Navy Classic, where it will face Winthrop. Game time is 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on WNAV-AM 1403, as well as on www.navysports.com(.)
An error-filled first half saw the two teams combine for 26 turnovers and 21 of 65 shooting (32 percent) from the field. The half ended with the Mids leading 29-23.
The second half began with Navy extending its lead to seven points on several occasions, but the Lady Hawks rallied to take a 37-36 lead on a pair of free throws by Octavia Thompson with 13:47 to play. Navy reclaimed the lead at 41-37, but UMES came right back with eight of the next 11 points to once again hold a one-point lead at 45-44.
Maslowski (So., Hopkins, Minn.) returned the lead to Navy and started a 10-0 run with a field goal at the 9:20 mark of the second half. Navy's 16-3 run ended with a Maslowski layup with 3:30 to play that gave the Mids a 60-49 cushion. The Mids, who shot a season-low 64 percent (16-25) from the foul line, drilled seven of eight free throws in the final three minutes to seal the victory.
Navy forced a season-high 27 turnovers, but the Mids committed a season-high 25 turnovers, as well. Navy shot 35 percent from the field, while holding UMES to 21-percent shooting. The Lady Hawks also shot just 42 percent from the free throw line. The Midshipmen outrebounded the Lady Hawks, 56-41.
Bryanna Herring (So., Columbia, Md.) led Navy with 12 points, while Adrienne Roseti (So., Williamsville, N.Y.), Maile Shimoda (So., Orange, Calif.) and Courtney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) all chipped in 10 points. The Lady Hawks were led by Kimberly Martin's 13 points.
The victory -- Navy's fourth straight -- improves Navy's record to 6-3 on the season, while UMES falls to 3-4. Navy advances to the title game of the Navy Classic for the 11th time in 13 tournaments on the Yard. UMES will face Southern Illinois, who dropped a 72-65 decision to Winthrop.
