Olympians Dominate Day One Of Water Polo Premier League Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Day one of the Men's Water Polo Division I Premier League Championships, being held at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, has given fans the opportunity to watch great water polo by the nations best players. Past Olympians and current national team members displayed their skills throughout Saturday's competition and proved why the Premier League Championship is one of the most elite water polo tournaments in the United States.

The Premier League Division I Championship is the second League Championship tournament to be held this year. On April 22nd and 23rd, nine of the countries Division II men's water polo teams played for the Division II League Championship in Austin, Texas. This weekend, only eight teams are playing for the Division I Premier League title, which include the top five men's water polo clubs in the U.S. and three USWP Regional teams. The water polo clubs participating include, last years league champion, The New York Athletic Club "A" Team, as well as The New York Athletic Club's "B" Team, Long Beach Shores Water Polo Club, The Olympic Club, and Newport Water Polo Foundation. The zone teams participating are comprised of the best college and high school players >from three regions, the Pacific, the Northeast, and the Southern Pacific. Long Beach Shore Water Polo Club and the Northeast regional team played the first game of the day. Despite a great effort by the Northeast and goalkeeper Nick Hill of Navy, Sean Kern, 2000 Olympian, of Long Bech Shore dominated the game and led his team to 13-9 victory over the Northeast by scoring six goals throughout the contest.

The second game of the day was between New York Athletic Club "A" Team and the Pacific. Peter Janov, NCAA Div. I All-American, led New York in scoring with three goals and helped secure their 10-4 victory. With Olympian Brad Shumaker, Bowie, Maryland, sidelined with a broken hand, Brian Hefron, NCAA Div. I All-American, led the way for Olympic club by scoring three goals in the 14-6 Victory over New York Athletic Club "B" Team.

In the fourth game of the day Ryan Bailey, 2000 Olyimpian, of Newport Water Polo Foundation scored six goals and dominated the southern Pacifc zone team. Newport won the contest 10-5. In New York Athletic Club's "A" Team second game of the day it was 1996 & 2000 Olympian Wolf Wigo who led the NYAC to a 13-5 victory over the Northeast by scoring two goals.

Newport and NYAC "B" team squared off later in the afternoon, which resulted in a 17-3 victory in Newport's favor. For the second time in the same day it was Olympian and current national team member Ryan Bailey who carried Newport to victory with four goals.

In one of the last games of the day Long Beach Shore lost to the Pacific Zone Team. Tony Azevado, 2000 Olympian, scored four goals to lead Pacific to a second half comeback which resulted in a 11-8 victory for Pacific. The final game of the day was between Olympic Club and the Southern Pacific zone team. Olympic Club goalkeeper Chris Aguilera controled the game by making key saves, one of which was a four meter penalty shot in the third quarter. Olympic Club won the contest 12-4.

The New York AC "A", the Olympic Club, Newport and the Pacific zone team appear headed for the final four on Sunday. Tickets for the weekend's Division I Premier League Championships can be purchased at the door at Lejeune or Macdonough Hall, U.S.N.A. Weekend pass $10.00. Day passes $6.00.
