ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Former Navy lacrosse standout Adam Borcz('01) was selected in the first round with the third overall pick by the Baltimore Bayhawks in the recent Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft. Defender Ryan Mollett of Princeton was drafted first by Rochester, while goalie Trevor Tierney of Princeton was drafted second by New Jersey.

"It has been a lifelong dream to play a professional sport and being a lacrosse player I never thought it would happen," said Borcz. "The timing of this new league couldn't be more perfect for me. The fact that Baltimore drafted me is really exciting, being a local guy and going too high school in Baltimore (Calvert Hall). After taking a quick look at our roster, I think we have a chance to be pretty good."

Borcz will miss the first two weeks of the season as he will be participating in the North-South All-Star game this weekend and will tryout for the World Team the following weekend. Borcz expects to join the Bayhawks in mid-June. The season will be over before Borcz reports to Dive School in Panama, Fla., Aug. 27.

Borcz was a Second-Team All-America selection for the Mids this spring and garnered First-Team All-ECAC honors. His season-best 32 goals this spring rank 13th on the Navy single-season goals scored list and he is the first Midshipmen to produce 30-plus goals in more than a decade. With a four-goal effort against arch rival Army in the final game of his career, the two-time First-Team All-ECAC midfielder moved into a tie with Rich Wehman (1980-83) for fifth on the Navy all-time career goals scored chart with 95. Meanwhile, he leaves the Academy as its 17th-leading scorer with 112 points.

Borcz, a four-year starter and winner of four N-Stars, received the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword for Men during Commissioning Week - an award presented to that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics during his years of varsity competition.

"I am really not surprised that he was drafted that high," said Navy head lacrosse coach Richie Meade. "Coaches in the league feel like he is one of three or four college players who could come in and contribute right away. He will be very well suited to the professional game, because it will be a transition game with man-to-man defense and a two-point shot."

Major League Lacrosse has six teams, located in Baltimore; Bridgeport, Conn.; Boston; Long Island, N.Y.; Montclair, N.J. and Rochester, N.Y. The inaugural Major League Lacrosse season begins Thursday, June 7th at Homewood Field in Baltimore, between the Baltimore Bayhawks and the Long Island Lizards.
