2001-02 Women's Hoops Schedule Announced

A challenging season-opening stretch and visits to nine different states are part of the 2001-02 Navy women's basketball schedule, announced today by Navy head coach Joe Sanchez.

The Midshipmen will begin the season by playing six of their first seven games on the road, with all six of those away games being played in a different state. Navy will start the season Nov. 16 at the College of Charleston, followed by a game two days later at Jacksonville. After the Nov. 21 home opener against Appalachian State, the Mids will travel cross country to play Nov. 25 at San Diego State. Navy will return to the East Coast, but stay on the road, to play Nov. 28 at Towson, Nov. 30 at Albany and Dec. 5 at Marshall.

Navy will be back in Alumni Hall Dec. 16 to face local foe Maryland-Baltimore County, then will play host to the Navy Classic Dec. 19-20. The 2001 Classic field includes Maryland-Eastern Shore, Southern Illinois and Winthrop.

"We have another nice field for the Navy Classic," said Sanchez. "We have four teams from different conferences and with different styles of play. It should be another exciting tournament."

Following the Christmas holiday, Navy will play Dec. 29 at Columbia, Jan. 2 at home against Valparaiso, then will close its nonconference season Jan. 5 by making the program's inaugural visit to academy-rival Air Force.

"Our focus this year with our nonconference schedule is to become a better road team," said Sanchez. "The more success we have on the road in the nonconference part of our season, the better and stronger team we will be at both home and on the road during the Patriot League season."

Navy will open Patriot League play by facing the two teams predicted to place first and second in the league's preseason poll. The Mids will begin their Patriot League season Jan. 8 at preseason favorite Holy Cross, then will play host to Bucknell Jan. 12. The game against the Bison opens a stretch where the Mids will play four of their next five games at home -- Jan. 16 vs. Lehigh (picked third in preseason poll), Jan. 19 at Colgate (picked seventh), Jan. 23 vs. Lafayette (picked eighth) and Jan. 26 vs. Army (picked fifth). Navy will close the first half of the league season Jan. 30 at American (picked fourth). Navy was picked to place sixth in the league.

Navy's home schedule in the second half of league play includes games Feb. 2 vs. Holy Cross, Feb. 13 vs. Colgate and Feb. 20 vs. American. Navy will close the regular season Feb. 23 in the annual N-Star game at Army.

The first two rounds of the 2002 Patriot League Tournament will be played at Show Place Arena in nearby Upper Marlboro, Md. The four quarterfinal games will be played March 1, with the semifinals to be contested two days later. The championship game of the league tournament will be played March 6 at the highest-seeded team in the championship game.

"I think the Patriot League is wide open this season," said Sanchez. "There are a number of teams which will challenge for the league title, and I feel we will be one of those teams."

Season tickets for both men's and women's basketball games are on sale now. Prices for season tickets are $90 for the general public, $56 for NAAA members, $48 for faculty and staff who are NAAA members and $30 for students ages 18 and under. Individual game tickets, including tickets for the Jan. 26 Army-Navy doubleheader (Jan. 26), will go on sale starting Oct. 22. Tickets can be purchased at the NAAA Ticket Office in Ricketts Hall, or by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY.
