Navy Women Lose Sixth Straight

HAMILTON, N.Y.-The Navy women's basketball team (8-9, 0-4) dropped its sixth straight game as Colgate (8-10, 2-2) rallied from a seven point second half deficit to defeat the Mids, 84-73, Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court. The six straight losses is the most by a Navy women's team since the 1999-2000 season when Navy lost 14 straight en route to a 5-23 record. It is also just the second time in school history that Navy has started 0-4 in the Patriot League (1999-00 being the other year).
"We didn't execute well on the offensive end and we need to do a better job on the boards and playing post defense," said Sanchez. "We know what our problems our and we our working on correcting them."
The Mids led 40-39 at the half as Malie Shimoda scored 11 first half points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mids the one point lead heading into the locker room.
Navy came out in the second half and went on a 16-10 run over the first seven minutes and took a 56-49 lead on two free throws by Bryanna Herring with 13:16 remaining.
At that point, things went south for the Mids as Navy could not buy a basket on the offensive end and continued to give up easy baskets on the defensive end. Colgate went on a 9-2 run, keyed by three easy lay-ups, to tie the game at 58 and, after a Catherine Dunn basket gave Navy a 60-58 lead with 9:55 left, the Raiders put the game away with a 24-10 run over the next nine minutes as the Raiders went on to the 84-73 victory.
"Our transition defense really hurt us," said Sanchez. "You have to be able to stop people and we didn't do that today."
Colgate was led by freshman Allison Lipinski, who scored game-high 22 points, while Sarah Parks and Malissa Burke had 13 points apiece.
Navy was led by Shimoda, who tied her season high with 19 points, and Courtney Davidson, who also chipped in 19 points and grabbed team-high eight rebounds. Herring added 11 points.
Navy will be back in action Wednesday night at 5:15 p.m. when the Mids host Lafayette at Alumni Hall.
