Mids Fall at End of OT to Holy Cross

For the second-straight contest between the two teams, Navy dropped an overtime decision to Holy Cross, this time losing an 82-79 contest Tuesday night at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
Holy Cross (9-4, 0-1) held a 43-36 lead at halftime, then extended its advantage over Navy (8-6, 0-1) to 11 points early in the second half. Navy cut the lead to one points several times in the second half, eventually taking a 58-57 lead on a pair of free throws from Bryanna Herring with 6:53 left in regulation.
Navy took a four-point lead -- 68-64 -- on an Abi Campbell (Fr., Richmond, Va.) three-pointer, but the Crusaders scored five-straight points to lead by one with 1:37 to play. After an Ali Luchsinger three-pointer gave Navy a 71-69 lead, Katie O'Keefe made one of two free throws to make the score 71-70 with 57 seconds left. Navy's Maile Shimoda (So., Orange, Calif.) was fouled with 37 seconds left, but missed both free throws. Holy Cross' Amanda Abraham was fouled on a drive with 26.8 seconds to play, but made just one of two free throws, leaving the score tied.
Navy brought the ball down the floor and put the ball in the hands of Davidson, who saw her off-balance 15-foot shot bounce off the rim as the buzzer sounded ending regulation at 71-71.
Davidson drilled a three-pointer at the start of overtime giving the Mids a quick 74-71 lead, but Holy Cross scored the next seven points to take a 78-74 lead with 1:28 to play. Shimoda made a three-pointer for Navy to cut the lead to one point, then, after a Kate Maslowski steal with 46 seconds to play returned the ball to Navy, Abi Campbell hit a 15-foot shot to give Navy a 79-78 lead with 27 seconds left.
Holy Cross worked the clock down and Katie O'Keefe scored a short field goal with eight seconds left which gave the Crusaders a one-point lead. Navy's Davidson brought the ball the length of the court, but lost the ball as she was knocked to the floor with three seconds to play. Shimoda fouled Maggie Fontana to stop the clock with 1.8 seconds left, and Fontana made both free throws to produce the final score of 82-79.
A season-high five players scored in double figures for Navy, led by Davidson with 23 points and four three-pointers. Davidson also recorded her first double-double of her career with 10 rebounds.
Despite the absence of starting forward Adrienne Roseti due to injury, Navy outrebounded Holy Cross 44-41. The Mids shot 40 percent from the floor and drilled 11 three-point field goals.
"It was a valiant effort by our players," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "We did so many things well and had every opportunity to win the game. We went into the game knowing what we had to do and we were able to accomplish almost everything we wanted to."
Navy will open the home portion of its Patriot League schedule Saturday when the Mids play host to Bucknell in a 12:30 p.m. game at Alumni Hall.
