Navy Outlook

After playing back-to-back games in the state of Pennsylvania, the Navy women's basketball team will return to Alumni Hall Wednesday night when it plays host to Colgate in a 5:15 p.m. contest.

Navy Review

Lehigh scored seven of the first eight points of the game on its way to an 87-60 victory over Navy, last Saturday in Bethlehem.

The Mids have allowed opponents to score 80 or more points in three of the last four games.

Courtney Davidson scored 13 points and tied a career high with five assists for the Mids, while Abi Campbell tied a career high with 13 points. Alison Luchsinger was the third Navy player to total 13 points against the Mountain Hawks, setting a new personal standard in the process.

Davidson is ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring (18.2 ppg), first in free throw percentage (91.6%), tied for first in three-point field goal percentage (42.9%), and second in three-point field goals made a game (2.59). In addition, she is nationally ranked in all four statistics, with a No. 2 ranking in free throw percentage.

Bryanna Herring scored just five points for Navy against Lehigh, ending a streak of 12-straight games in which she totaled double-figure points.

On the year, Herring ranks second on the team with 13.8 points per game and leads the Mids with 6.9 rebounds a game and 31 blocked shots. Herring ranks first in the Patriot League with 3.78 offensive rebounds a game, as well as third with 1.35 blocks per game.

Maile Shimoda handed out six assists Saturday at Lehigh, the eighth time this season she has totaled five or more helpers. She is ranked fifth in the Patriot League with an average of 3.96 assists per game.

As a team, Navy's offensive and defensive averages are virtually identical to one another. The Mids are scoring 66.8 points per game and allowing 68.5 points per game. Navy is grabbing 37.7 rebounds a game, while Navy foes are averaging 38.3 rebounds a game. The Mids have converted on 132 three-point field goals this season, the same number as they have allowed.

Navy is shooting 38.8 percent from the field, 33.8 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74.9 percent from the free throw line.

The Navy defense is allowing opponents to shoot 42.1 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three-point land.

Colgate Preview

Colgate travels to Annapolis with an 11-14 record on the season, including a 5-5 mark in the Patriot League.

As a team, Colgate is averaging 73.5 points per game and is shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 33.6 percent from the three-point line and 70.9 percent from the free throw line. Colgate opponents are scoring 75.2 points per game, shooting 43.4 percent from the field, and 29.8 percent from behind the three-point stripe.

Allison Lipinski leads the Raiders in scoring with 15.9 points per game, while Milaina Lagzdins is the top rebounder on the squad with an average of 7.8 boards per game.

Series History

Navy holds a 13-10 lead in the series, but has dropped three-straight games, as well as four of the last six. Navy has an 8-3 advantage in games played in Annapolis.

Close Calls

Twelve of Navy's 23 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less (5-7 record), with nine games decided by four points or less (3-6 record).

Navy has had eight games decided on the final possession of games (3-5 record), with a ninth game -- at San Diego State -- not finalized until the Aztecs converted one of two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock for a 73-69 victory.

Navy has had five of its nine league games go down to the final possession. The Mids have lost four of their eight league games by a total of nine points

Service Selections

Navy's senior class made its service selections on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.

Women's basketball team captain Kristen Kavanaugh selected Marine Corps (ground) and will report to Quantico, Va., to begin The Basic School July 17 with Echo Company.

Classmate Elaine Jensen will be a surface warfare office aboard the USS Wasp. She begins her next phase of schooling Nov. 2.

On the Bench

There have been quite a few changes to the Navy coaching staff since the first day of practice.

First, Glenn Rigney joined the Navy staff in early November. Rigney had served as varsity head coach of the girl's basketball program at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1993, winning four district titles and compiling a 190-59 record.

Next, Lt. Heather Lee left the coaching staff following Navy's Jan. 12 game against Bucknell to return to active duty. She is on her way to being the Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS John Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. The '93 graduate of the Academy still ranks among the Navy leaders in several statistics, including third in career three-point field goals made.

Finally, Navy's Jan. 26th game against Army marked the last game for assistant coach Colleen Bentz. In her sixth season at Navy, Bentz left the team to report to Quantico, Va., to begin training at the FBI Academy.

Ironman Awards

Courtney Davidson has played the entire game in seven games this season, including all 45 minutes of Navy's overtime game at Holy Cross.

Maile Shimoda has played the full 40 minutes in six games on the season, including five of the last nine. She played the entire game once last season as a freshman, never leaving the floor in Navy's overtime loss to Holy Cross.

Seeing the World

It seems as if the Navy women's basketball team has spent the majority of the season on the road. The year began with Navy playing six of its first seven games on the road, with all six road games being played in different states. Navy closes its season by playing four of its last six games away from Alumni Hall.

The Mids have played 13 road games in nine different states this season -- South Carolina (College of Charleston), Florida (Jacksonville), California (San Diego State), Maryland (Towson), New York (Albany, Columbia, Colgate), West Virginia (Marshall), Colorado (Air Force), Massachusetts (Holy Cross), Pennsylvania (Bucknell, Lehigh) -- as well as in the District of Columbia (American).

All told, the Mids will play 15 road games in nine different states this season, traveling a total of 15,048 miles.

Navy already has won four road games this season after winning three last year and just one during the 1999-2000 campaign. With one more victory away from Alumni Hall, Navy will match its total of road wins for the 1998-99 season.

Sanchez Surpasses Games #200 and #700

Navy's Feb. 6 game at Bucknell was Joe Sanchez's 700th of his career as a collegiate head coach. Earlier this season he coached his 200th game at Navy (Nov. 21, Appalachian State).

Navy has opened games with seven different starting lineup combinations this season. Nine different players have started games this year, with only Maile Shimoda and Bryanna Herring receiving the starting nod in all 23 games.

Game-Winning Baskets

Courtney Davidson's two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in Navy's Jan. 23 game against Lafayette marked the fifth time this season she has scored the game-winning basket for the Midshipmen. It also marked the second time this year she has scored the game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Navy's free throw percentage of 74.9 percent not only ranks second in the Patriot League, it also puts the Mids on pace to set a new Navy single-season record.

Twice this season, Navy has won games by free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the contest (Maile Shimoda vs. UMBC, D16; Courtney Davidson vs. Lafayette, J23).

- Bucknell, J12 -- The Mids shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line, the second-highest team free throw percentage in Navy history (trails only a 24-of-25, 96-percent performance, Dec. 7, 1998 vs. Delaware).

- Jacksonville, N18 -- Converted 14-of-15 second-half free throws and 21-of-24 attempts.

- Marshall, D5 -- Navy made 17-of-20 second-half free throws, as well as 22-of-26.

- Columbia, D30 -- The Mids made 14-of-14 free throws in the final 1:52, as well as 25 of its 30 shots from the line.

Individually, Courtney Davidson, whose 76.7 percent shooting from the free throw line last season was the second-best percentage by a Navy freshman, leads the league and is ranked second nationally at 91.6 percent.

Three-Point Shots

Navy is continuing to have great success from behind the three-point line this season, one year after it set a Patriot League record with 176 three-point field goals made.

Individually last season, both Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson smashed the Navy freshman record of 30 three-point field goals, finishing with 48 and 47, respectively.

This season, Navy has made 132 three-point field goals, an average of 5.7 per game. Davidson has accounted for 57 triples this season, with Shimoda second with 39.

Navy drilled 11 three-pointers both at Air Force (J5) and at Holy Cross (J8), tying the mark for the fourth-most triples made in a game (Navy record is 14). The Mids have made six or more three-pointers in 12 games this year. Three of the top-six three-point performances in Navy history have been set this season.

The Midshipmen have made at least one three-point field goal in 132 consecutive games. The last time Navy was held without a three pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.

Bryanna Herring

Bryanna Herring's streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points came to an end Saturday at Lehigh. She had scored in double figures in 12-straight games and averaged 15.9 points (191) and 7.3 rebounds per game (88) over that span, including averages of 17.8 points and 7 rebounds a game over the final four contests.

Herring connected on nine of 14 attempts from the field and drilled seven of her eight free throw attempts against the Dolphins, while also leading Navy with eight rebounds.

Navy's Rallies

Navy has rallied from both an eight-point and seven-point halftime deficit to win games this season.

The Mids trailed 41-34 at intermission to Appalachian State (N21) before rallying to post a 72-71 victory. Navy also found itself down 41-33 at Columbia (D30) before outscoring the Lions 48-29 in the second half for an 81-70 win.

Now in its 25th season, Navy has rallied to win games from halftime deficits of seven points or more just 13 times, with its largest comeback being 10 points (Feb. 12, 1987 vs. Towson; Dec. 20, 1998 vs. Mississippi).

Rallies - Part II

Four times this season the Mids have rallied from double-digit deficits, three times to take the lead and once to close to within one point. This is no surprise, as Navy accomplished this feat five times last year.

Navy Depth

Don't be surprised to see a lot of players shuttle in and out of the Navy lineup this season. Head coach Joe Sanchez has used a minimum of nine players in each of Navy's games this season, with 10 or more players taking to the court in all but one contest.

Second-Half Team

Navy has proven to be a second-half team this season, having scored more points in the second half of 15 of its 23 games. Navy is averaging 30.6 points per first half, but is scoring 35.8 points per second half. Navy has scored 40 or more points in the first half of four games this year, but has surpassed 40 points in the second half of seven games.

Assisting the Team

Maile Shimoda has moved into 14th place in Navy history for most career assists (168), one spot -- and one assist -- ahead of Lisa Steinmetz.

Shimoda's 91 assists this season are the most since Kim Jackson recorded 136 during the 1993-94 campaign. She is on the verge of recording just the 13th 100-assist season at Navy.

Maile Shimoda

Maile Shimoda had the best all-around shooting night of her career J29 at American. Shimoda connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field -- including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line -- and sank 6-of-7 free throws for a career high 28 points. In addition, her six treys on the night also marked a personal best.

Season Highlights

- Capped off her pre-holiday slate of games by being named MVP of the Navy Classic. She scored 10 points and tied a career high with eight assists against UMES (D19), then scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the title game versus Winthrop (D20).

- Army, J26 -- Career-high eight rebounds.

- Lafayette, J23 -- Totaled four assists and swiped career-high five steals.

- Colgate, J19 -- Scored 19 points, made four three-point field goals and added five assists.

- UMBC, D16 -- Scored the last-five points of the game, including the decisive two free throws with 7.2 seconds left in the game.

- Marshall, D5 -- Shimoda grabbed a then career-high seven rebounds and drilled four three-point field goals on her way to Navy scoring honors with 19 points.

- Appalachian St., N21-- Scored all but three of her team-high 18 points after halftime, while accounting for six of Navy's final-10 points.

Block Party

After totalling just 39 blocks all of last season, Navy players already have rejected 62 shots this season, an average of 2.7 per game.

On its current pace the Mids would block a total of 75 shots this season, which would be the most by a Navy team since the 1994-95 squad totalled 82 blocks.

Leading the way with blocked shots this season has been Bryanna Herring and Adrienne Roseti. Herring leads the team with 31, with Roseti second at 15.

Herring's 31 blocks this season is a new Navy record for most blocks by a sophomore, while both players also have moved into the top-seven for most blocks in a Navy career.
