Navy Outlook

Navy will look for its second-straight victory Saturday when the Midshipmen travel to Easton, Pa., to play a 1 p.m. game against Lafayette. The game can be heard live on WNAV-AM 1430, as well as through www.navysports.com(.)

Navy Review

One of Navy's best all-around efforts of the Patriot League season resulted in an 81-73 victory over Colgate, Wednesday night in Alumni Hall. The Mids scored 51 first-half points and then converted 9-of-12 free throws in the final three minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Courtney Davidson scored 22 points for Navy in the win, with Maile Shimoda (12), Lisa Steinmetz (11) and Adrienne Roseti (11) all joining her in double figures. Steinmetz added eight rebounds, six assists and just one turnover in 31 minutes of action.

Navy also received solid minutes from its bench, which shot 7-of-7 from the field.

Davidson is ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring (18.4 ppg), first in free throw percentage (89.4%), second in three-point field goal percentage (42.9%), and second in three-pointers made a game (2.61). In addition, she is nationally ranked in all four statistics, with a No. 3 ranking in free throw percentage.

Bryanna Herring ranks second on the team with 13.4 points per game and leads the Mids with 6.7 rebounds a game and 32 blocked shots. Herring ranks first in the Patriot League with 3.67 offensive rebounds a game, as well as third with 1.33 blocks per game.

In addition to her one dozen points, Shimoda grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists against the Raiders. She is ranked fifth in the Patriot League with an average of 3.92 assists per game.

As a team, Navy's offensive and defensive averages are virtually identical to one another. The Mids are scoring 67.4 points per game and allowing 68.7 points per game. Navy is grabbing 38 rebounds a game, while Navy foes are averaging 38.2 boards a game. The Mids have converted on 137 three-point field goals this season, just eight less than opponents have hit.

Navy is shooting 39.3 percent from the field, 33.8 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74 percent from the free throw line.

The Navy defense is allowing opponents to shoot 41.9 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from three-point land.

Lafayette Preview

Lafayette enters Saturday's game with a 3-21 overall record, as well as an 1-10 league mark.

As a team on the full season, Colgate is averaging 59 points per game and is shooting 41.6 percent from the field, 21.5 percent from the three-point line and 65.6 percent from the free throw line. Colgate opponents are scoring 74.1 points per game, shooting 45 percent from the field, and 35.2 percent from behind the three-point stripe.

Colleen Fitzpatrick leads the Leopards in both scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.6 rpg).

Close Calls

Twelve of Navy's 24 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less (5-7 record), with nine games decided by four points or less (3-6 record).

Navy has had eight games decided on the final possession of games (3-5 record), with a ninth game -- at San Diego State -- not finalized until the Aztecs converted one of two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock for a 73-69 victory.

Navy has had five of its 11 league games go down to the final possession. The Mids have lost four of their eight league games by a total of nine points

Service Selections

Navy's senior class made its service selections on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.

Women's basketball team captain Kristen Kavanaugh selected Marine Corps (ground) and will report to Quantico, Va., to begin The Basic School July 17 with Echo Company.

Classmate Elaine Jensen will be a surface warfare office aboard the USS Wasp. She begins her next phase of schooling Nov. 2.

On the Bench

There have been quite a few changes to the Navy coaching staff since the first day of practice.

First, Glenn Rigney joined the Navy staff in early November. Rigney had served as varsity head coach of the girl's basketball program at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1993, winning four district titles and compiling a 190-59 record.

Next, Lt. Heather Lee left the coaching staff following Navy's Jan. 12 game against Bucknell to return to active duty. She is on her way to being the Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS John Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. The '93 graduate of the Academy still ranks among the Navy leaders in several statistics, including third in career three-point field goals made.

Finally, Navy's Jan. 26th game against Army marked the last game for assistant coach Colleen Bentz. In her sixth season at Navy, Bentz left the team to report to Quantico, Va., to begin training at the FBI Academy.

Seeing the World

It seems as if the Navy women's basketball team has spent the majority of the season on the road. The year began with Navy playing six of its first seven games on the road, with all six road games being played in different states. Navy closes its season by playing four of its last six games away from Alumni Hall.

The Mids have played 13 road games in nine different states this season -- South Carolina (College of Charleston), Florida (Jacksonville), California (San Diego State), Maryland (Towson), New York (Albany, Columbia, Colgate), West Virginia (Marshall), Colorado (Air Force), Massachusetts (Holy Cross), Pennsylvania (Bucknell, Lehigh) -- as well as in the District of Columbia (American).

All told, the Mids will play 15 road games in nine different states this season, traveling a total of 15,048 miles.

Navy already has won four road games this season after winning three last year and just one during the 1999-2000 campaign. With one more victory away from Alumni Hall, Navy will match its total of road wins for the 1998-99 season.

Sanchez Surpasses Games #200 and #700

Navy's Feb. 6 game at Bucknell was Joe Sanchez's 700th of his career as a collegiate head coach. Earlier this season he coached his 200th game at Navy (Nov. 21, Appalachian State).

Navy has opened games with eight different starting lineup combinations this season. Nine different players have started games this year, with only Maile Shimoda receiving the starting nod in all 24 games.

Game-Winning Baskets

Courtney Davidson's two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in Navy's Jan. 23 game against Lafayette marked the fifth time this season she has scored the game-winning basket for the Midshipmen. It also marked the second time this year she has scored the game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Big Halves

Navy's 51 first-half points Wednesday against Colgate marked the first time in three seasons the Mids have totaled at least 50 points in a half. Navy last cracked the 50-point mark Feb. 27, 1999, against Army.

Accepting Charity

Navy's free throw percentage of 74 percent not only ranks third in the Patriot League, it also puts the Mids on pace to set a new Navy single-season record.

Twice this season, Navy has won games by free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the contest (Maile Shimoda vs. UMBC, D16; Courtney Davidson vs. Lafayette, J23).

o Colgate, F13 -- Navy shot a poor 20-of-33 in the game (60.6%), but converted 9-of-12 free throws in the last 3:01 to seal the victory.

o Bucknell, J12 -- The Mids shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line, the second-highest team free throw percentage in Navy history (trails only a 24-of-25, 96-percent performance, Dec. 7, 1998 vs. Delaware).

o Jacksonville, N18 -- Converted 14-of-15 second-half free throws and 21-of-24 attempts.

o Marshall, D5 -- Navy made 17-of-20 second-half free throws, as well as 22-of-26.

Three-Point Shots

Navy is continuing to have great success from behind the three-point line this season, one year after it set a Patriot League record with 176 three-point field goals made.

Individually last season, both Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson smashed the Navy freshman record of 30 three-point field goals, finishing with 48 and 47, respectively.

This season, Navy has made 137 three-point field goals, an average of 5.7 per game and the third-highest total in school history. Davidson has accounted for 60 triples this season, with Shimoda second with 40.

Navy drilled 11 three-pointers both at Air Force (J5) and at Holy Cross (J8), tying the mark for the fourth-most triples made in a game (Navy record is 14). The Mids have made six or more three-pointers in 12 games this year. Three of the top-six three-point performances in Navy history have been set this season.

The Midshipmen have made at least one three-point field goal in 133 consecutive games. The last time Navy was held without a three pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.

A problem for Navy this season, however, is its three-point field goal defense. The Mids have allowed opponents to connect on 145 three-pointers, the highest total Navy has ever allowed.

Bryanna Herring

Bryanna Herring's streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points came to an end last Saturday at Lehigh. She had scored in double figures in 12-straight games and averaged 15.9 points (191) and 7.3 rebounds per game (88) over that span, including averages of 17.8 points and 7 rebounds a game over the final four contests.

Navy's Rallies

Navy has rallied from both an eight-point and seven-point halftime deficit to win games this year.

The Mids trailed 41-34 at intermission to Appalachian State (N21) before rallying to post a 72-71 victory. Navy also found itself down 41-33 at Columbia (D30) before outscoring the Lions 48-29 in the second half for an 81-70 win.

Now in its 25th season, Navy has rallied to win games from halftime deficits of seven points or more just 13 times, with its largest comeback being 10 points (Feb. 12, 1987 vs. Towson; Dec. 20, 1998 vs. Mississippi).

Navy Depth

Don't be surprised to see a lot of players shuttle in and out of the Navy lineup this season. Head coach Joe Sanchez has used a minimum of nine players in each of Navy's games this season, with 10 or more players taking to the court in all but one contest.

Shooting Down the Stretch

With her three free throws down the stretch of Navy's victory Wednesday against Colgate, Maile Shimoda took a slim lead for the most points scored in the last five minutes of Navy's games this season. Shimoda has totaled 65 points in the closing minutes of games this year, one ahead of Courtney Davidson.

Shimoda also has a large lead for the most free throws made in the last five minutes of games this year, sinking 38, 10 more than Davidson's second-place total of 28. More than half of Shimoda's free throws on the year were made in the last five minutes of games (38-of-71).

Assisting the Team

Lisa Steinmetz has moved into 14th place in Navy history for most career assists with 173, two assists and one spot ahead of Maile Shimoda.

Shimoda's 94 assists this season are the most since Kim Jackson recorded 136 during the 1993-94 campaign. She is on the verge of recording just the 13th 100-assist season at Navy.

Maile Shimoda

Maile Shimoda had the best all-around shooting night of her career J29 at American. Shimoda connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field -- including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line -- and sank 6-of-7 free throws for a career-high 28 points. In addition, her six treys on the night also marked a personal best.

Season Highlights

o Capped off her pre-holiday slate of games by being named MVP of the Navy Classic. She scored 10 points and tied a career high with eight assists against UMES (D19), then scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the title game versus Winthrop (D20).

o Army, J26 -- Career-high eight rebounds.

o Lafayette, J23 -- Totaled four assists and swiped career-high five steals.

o Colgate, J19 -- Scored 19 points, made four three-point field goals and added five assists.

o UMBC, D16 -- Scored the last-five points of the game, including the decisive two free throws with 7.2 seconds left in the game.

o Marshall, D5 -- Grabbed a then career-high seven rebounds and drilled four three-point field goals on her way to Navy scoring honors with 19 points.

o Appalachian St., N21-- Scored all but three of her team-high 18 points after halftime, while accounting for six of Navy's final-10 points.

Block Party

After totaling just 39 blocks all of last season, Navy has rejected 67 shots this year.

On its current pace the Mids would block a total of 78 shots this season, which would be the most by a Navy team since the 1994-95 squad totaled 82 blocks.

Leading the way with blocked shots this season has been Bryanna Herring and Adrienne Roseti. Herring leads the team with 32, with Roseti second at 18.

Herring's 32 blocks this season is a new Navy record for most blocks by a sophomore, while both players also have moved into the top-seven for most blocks in a Navy career.
