Navy Women's Basketball Team Wins Second Straight

EASTON, Pa.-Malie Shimoda and Courtney Davidson scored 14 points apiece, while Adrienne Roseti scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Navy (12-13, 4-8 in the Patriot League) to a 50-45 victory over Lafayette (3-22, 1-11 in the Patriot League) in front of 1,031 fans at the Kirby Sports Center.
Neither team shot the ball well in the low scoring affair, as the Mids made just 33 percent of their shots (18-54), while Lafayette converted on just 37 percent of its shots (17-46).
"We knew going in to the game that our defense would have to be strong," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "Our defense did exactly what we wanted it too. Except for their one run late in the game, I was very pleased with our defense."
Navy fell behind 16-9 in the first 10:45 of the game, but finished with a 14-2 run to take a 23-18 lead at the half.
Navy stretched the lead to 14 at the 13:04 mark of the second half when Roseti scored in the paint to make it 36-22. Roseti scored 10 of her 12 points and grabbed five of her eight rebounds in the second half.
"Adrienne got into a nice rhythm in the second half and we were looking to get the ball to her," said Sanchez. "The guards did a great job of getting her the ball in a position to score and she knocked down some big shots."
Lafayette, though, wold not give in too the Mids easily, going on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to three at 36-33 on a lay-in by Elizabeth Rojahn with 7:52 remaining. Shimoda stopped the run by making two free throws with 6:59 remaining and, after a basket by Rojahn, Roseti put the Mids up 40-35 with 6:12 remaining.
Lafayette was able to cut the lead to three on three more occasions, but Navy always answered with a basket or free throws of its own.
Laurie Infantino made it 44-41 with 1:54 to go on a three-pointer, but Roseti answered with a basket to put the Mids back up by five. Colleen Fitzpatrick scored on a lay-in for Lafayette with 1:08 remaining to make it 46-43, but Davidson answered with two free throws to make it 48-43 with 22 seconds left. Kim Costello scored on a lay-in for the Leopards with 10 seconds left to make it 48-45, by Davidson made one of two free throws to put the game away and Shimoda scored the final point with seven seconds left on a free throw.
With the victory, Navy pulled into a sixth place tie with Army and trail fifth place Colgate by just one game. Holy Cross and Bucknell remain on top of the league with 10-2 records.
The Mids will be back in action Wednesday night when Navy hosts American at 5:15 p.m. in the final home game for seniors Kristen Kavanaugh and Elaine Jensen.
