WEST POINT, N.Y. -- After Saturday's competition in the 2002 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Army, the Navy track & field squads will be looking for improved performances on Sunday in order to bring home the championship trophy.
While the women's team (10-3 dual-meet record) has not scored any meet points through three scored events (pentathlon, 5000m, weight throw), the Mids are still in excellent shape to defend its first-ever league title with many of their top competitors yet to have raced. While Navy scored no points in those events, there were some encouraging performances in the preliminary qualifying rounds.
Junior sprinter Danielle Yambao (Cerritos, Calif.) has qualified for a pair of finals that will be held Sunday. Yambao was the second-fastest qualifier in the 55m dash (7.37), and her time of 26.16 in the semi-finals of the 200m dash is the fourth-best showing so far. Also of note from women's qualifying Saturday was Shannon Crites' (Jr./Powell, Ohio) third-place showing in the semi-finals of the 55m hurdles (8.50).
Through six scored events in the men's track meet, Navy has scored 17 points, which places them in fifth place. Army leads the competition with 87.67 points.
High jumpers Brendan Pool (So./Ocala, Fla.) and Eric Madonia (Jr./Chandler, Ariz.) tied for third-place in their event, as both cleared a height of 1.96 meters. Bubba Durrum (So./Mt. Pleasant, Texas) was a third-place finisher in the pole vault (4.50 meters), while the Midshipmen's 4 x 800 relay team ran to a sixth-place showing (7:48.30).
