The Navy women's basketball team will honor seniors Elaine Jensen and team captain Kristen Kavanaugh prior to its final home game of the season, Wednesday night at Alumni Hall when the Mids take on American. Tipoff time is slated for 5:15 p.m.

Navy Review

The sports cliche, "Every victory is beautiful" definitely can be used in regards to Navy's last game, a 50-45 win Saturday afternoon at Lafayette. The teams combined to shot 35 percent from the field and commit 44 turnovers. The Mids nearly surrendered a 14-point lead with 13 minutes to play, but emerged with the win thanks to two big baskets by Adrienne Roseti, along with Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson sinking 4-of-6 free throws in last three minutes of the game.

Davidson and Shimoda tied for scoring honors with 14 points apiece, while Roseti scored 10 of her 12 points and grabbed five of her eight rebounds after halftime.

Davidson has scored in double figures in nine-straight games (157 points, 17.4 ppg) and in 22 games on the year. She is ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring (18.2 ppg), first in free throw percentage (88.9%), second in three-point field goal percentage (42.4%), and second in three-pointers made a game (2.54). In addition, she is nationally ranked in all four statistics, with a top-10 ranking in free throw percentage.

Shimoda's 14 points were in addition to her game-high five assists. She has dished out five or more helpers in nine games this year and is ranked fourth in the league with 3.96 assists per game.

For Roseti, Saturday marked the fourth time in the last five games she has scored 10 or more points and grabbed at least eight rebounds. She is averaging 11.8 points (59) and 7.8 rebounds (39) a game during this span.

As a team, Navy's offensive and defensive averages are virtually identical to one another. The Mids are scoring 66.7 points and allowing 67.8 points per game. Navy is grabbing 38 rebounds a game, while Navy foes are averaging 37.9 boards a game. The Mids have converted on 140 three-point field goals this season, just seven less than their opponents have hit.

Navy is shooting 39.1 percent from the field, 33.7 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74.1 percent from the free throw line.

The Navy defense is allowing opponents to shoot 41.7 percent from the field and 36.1 percent from three-point land.

American Preview

American makes the short drive to Annapolis carrying a 12-12 record this season, as well as a 7-5 record in its first Patriot League campaign.

As a team American is averaging 72 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from the field, 32.9 percent from the three-point line and 62.3 percent from the free throw line. American opponents are scoring 73.1 points per game, shooting 42.1 percent from the field, and 34.3 percent from behind the three-point stripe.

Five players are scoring in double figures for the Eagles, who are led by Katryn Costenbader at 14.9 points per game. Hollie Steinman leads the Eagles in rebounding with 6.6 boards a game.

Close Calls

Thirteen of Navy's 25 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less (6-7 record), with nine games decided by four points or less (3-6 record).

Navy has had eight games decided on the final possession of games (3-5 record), with a ninth game -- at San Diego State -- not finalized until the Aztecs converted one of two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock for a 73-69 victory, as well as a 10th -- at Lafayette -- when Navy made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left for a 50-45 win.

Navy has had five of its 12 league games go down to the final possession. Four of Navy's eight league losses have been by a total of nine points.

Service Selections

Navy's senior class made its service selections on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.

Women's basketball team captain Kristen Kavanaugh selected Marine Corps (ground) and will report to Quantico, Va., to begin The Basic School July 17 with Echo Company.

Classmate Elaine Jensen will be a surface warfare office aboard the USS Wasp. She begins her next phase of schooling Nov. 2.

On the Bench

There have been quite a few changes to the Navy coaching staff since the first day of practice.

First, Glenn Rigney joined the Navy staff in early November. Rigney had served as varsity head coach of the girl's basketball program at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1993, winning four district titles and compiling a 190-59 record.

Next, Lt. Heather Lee left the coaching staff following Navy's Jan. 12 game against Bucknell to return to active duty. She is on her way to being the Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS John Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. The '93 graduate of the Academy still ranks among the Navy leaders in several statistics, including third in career three-point field goals made.

Finally, Navy's Jan. 26th game against Army marked the last game for assistant coach Colleen Bentz. In her sixth season at Navy, Bentz left the team to report to Quantico, Va., to begin training at the FBI Academy.

Playoff Picture

Should Navy beat American (Wed.) and Army (Sat.) AND Army beats Colgate (Wed.) AND Lafayette beats Colgate (Sat.), Navy would enter the league tournament as the No. 5 seed. Navy would win a three-way tiebreaker with Army and Colgate (3-1 head-to-head record).

Otherwise, the winner of Saturday's Army-Navy game will be the No. 6 seed and the loser will be seeded No. 7.

Adrienne Roseti

One of Navy's more consistent players of late has been Adrienne Roseti. Now fully healed from a lower left leg infection that caused her to miss four games from Jan. 2-12, Roseti has scored 10 or more points and grabbed eight or more rebounds in four of Navy's last five games.

Seeing the World

It seems as if the Navy women's basketball team has spent the majority of the season on the road. The year began with Navy playing six of its first seven games on the road, with all six road games being played in different states. Navy closes its season by playing four of its last six games away from Alumni Hall.

The Mids have played 14 road games in nine different states this season -- South Carolina (College of Charleston), Florida (Jacksonville), California (San Diego State), Maryland (Towson), New York (Albany, Columbia, Colgate), West Virginia (Marshall), Colorado (Air Force), Massachusetts (Holy Cross), Pennsylvania (Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette) -- as well as in the District of Columbia (American).

All told, the Mids will play 15 road games in nine different states this season, traveling a total of 15,048 miles.

Navy has won five road games this season, after winning three last year and just one during the 1999-2000 campaign. It is the most wins away from home for Navy since the 1998-99 season.

Navy has opened games with eight different starting lineup combinations this season. Nine different players have started games this year, with only Maile Shimoda receiving the starting nod in all 25 games.

Game-Winning Baskets

Courtney Davidson's two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in Navy's Jan. 23 game against Lafayette marked the fifth time this season she has scored the game-winning basket for the Midshipmen. It also marked the second time this year she has scored the game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Big Halves

Navy's 51 first-half points the Feb. 13 game against Colgate marked the first time in three seasons the Mids have totaled at least 50 points in a half. Navy last cracked the 50-point mark Feb. 27, 1999, against Army (50 points).

Accepting Charity

Navy's free throw percentage of 74.1 percent not only ranks second in the Patriot League, it also puts the Mids on pace to set a new Navy single-season record.

Twice this season, Navy has won games by free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the contest (Maile Shimoda vs. UMBC, D16; Courtney Davidson vs. Lafayette, J23).

o Colgate, F13 -- Navy shot a poor 20-of-33 in the game (60.6%), but converted 9-of-12 free throws in the last 3:01 to seal the victory.

o Bucknell, J12 -- The Mids shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line, the second-highest team free throw percentage in Navy history (trails only a 24-of-25, 96-percent performance, Dec. 7, 1998 vs. Delaware).

o Jacksonville, N18 -- Converted 14-of-15 second-half free throws and 21-of-24 attempts.

Three-Point Shots

Navy is continuing to have great success from behind the three-point line this season, one year after it set a Patriot League record with 176 three-point field goals made.

Individually last season, both Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson smashed the Navy freshman record of 30 three-point field goals, finishing with 48 and 47, respectively.

This season, Navy has made 140 three-point field goals, an average of 5.6 per game and the third-highest total in school history. Davidson has accounted for 61 triples this season, with Shimoda second with 42.

Navy drilled 11 three-pointers both at Air Force (J5) and at Holy Cross (J8), tying the mark for the fourth-most triples made in a game (Navy record is 14). The Mids have made six or more three-pointers in 12 games this year. Three of the top-six three-point performances in Navy history have been set this season.

The Midshipmen have made at least one three-point field goal in 134 consecutive games. The last time Navy was held without a three pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.

Bryanna Herring

Bryanna Herring's streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points came to an end Jan. 16 at Lehigh. She had scored in double figures in 12-straight games and averaged 15.9 points (191) and 7.3 rebounds per game (88) over that span, including averages of 17.8 points and 7 rebounds a game over the final four contests.

Navy's Rallies

Navy has rallied from both an eight-point and seven-point halftime deficit to win games this year.

The Mids trailed 41-34 at intermission to Appalachian State (N21) before rallying to post a 72-71 victory. Navy also found itself down 41-33 at Columbia (D30) before outscoring the Lions 48-29 in the second half for an 81-70 win.

Now in its 25th season, Navy has rallied to win games from halftime deficits of seven points or more just 13 times, with its largest comeback being 10 points (Feb. 12, 1987 vs. Towson; Dec. 20, 1998 vs. Mississippi).

Navy Depth

Don't be surprised to see a lot of players shuttle in and out of the Navy lineup this season. Head coach Joe Sanchez has used a minimum of nine players in each of Navy's games this season, with 10 or more players taking to the court in all but one contest.

Shooting Down the Stretch

With three free throws in the closing minutes of the Lafayette game, Courtney Davidson reclaimed the top spot on the team for most points scored in the last five minutes.

Davidson has scored 68 points in the last five minutes of games, two points more than Maile Shimoda.

Shimoda, though, has a large lead for the most free throws made in the last five minutes of games this year, sinking 39, eight more than Davidson's second-place total of 31. More than half of Shimoda's free throws on the year have been made in the last five minutes of games (39-of-75).

Assisting the Team

Lisa Steinmetz and Maile Shimoda are tied for 14th place in Navy history for most career assists. Both players have totaled 176 assists in their respective careers, and each stand just four helpers away from the 13th place total of 180.

Shimoda's 99 assists this season are the most since Kim Jackson recorded 136 during the 1993-94 campaign. She is on the verge of recording just the 13th 100-assist season at Navy.

Maile Shimoda

Maile Shimoda had the best all-around shooting night of her career Jan. 29 at American. Shimoda connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field -- including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line -- and sank 6-of-7 free throws for a career-high 28 points. In addition, her six treys on the night also marked a personal best.

o Capped off her pre-holiday slate of games

by being named MVP of the Navy Classic. She scored 10 points and tied a career high with eight assists against UMES (D19), then scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the title game versus Winthrop (D20).

o Lafayette, J23 -- Totaled four assists and swiped career-high five steals.

o Colgate, J19 -- Scored 19 points, made four three-point field goals and added five assists.

o UMBC, D16 -- Scored the last-five points of the game, including the decisive two free throws with 7.2 seconds left in the game.

o Marshall, D5 -- Grabbed a then career-high seven rebounds and drilled four three-point field goals on her way to Navy scoring honors with 19 points.

o Appalachian St., N21-- Scored all but three of her team-high 18 points after halftime, while accounting for six of Navy's final-10 points.

Block Party

After totaling just 39 blocks all of last season, Navy has rejected 69 shots this year.

On its current pace the Mids would block a total of 77 shots this season, which would be the most by a Navy team since the 1994-95 squad totaled 82 blocks.

Leading the way with blocked shots this season has been Bryanna Herring and Adrienne Roseti. Herring leads the team with 32, with Roseti second at 18.

Herring's 32 blocks this season is a new Navy record for most blocks by a sophomore, while both players also have moved into the top-seven for most blocks in a Navy career.

Scoring 80

Navy has scored 80 or more points in three games this season. The last time Navy scored at least 80 points in at four or more games was during the 1996-97 season when the Mids scored 80 points in five games.

Sanchez Surpasses Games #200 and #700

Navy's Feb. 6 game at Bucknell was Joe Sanchez's 700th of his career as a collegiate head coach. Earlier this season he coached his 200th game at Navy (Nov. 21, Appalachian State).
