Mids Fall in Another Buzzer Beater

Adrienne Roseti's game-tying 12-foot shot rimmed out at the buzzer, preserving a 62-60 victory for Holy Cross, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall. ?The game was the eighth this season for Navy decided on the last possession.
Holy Cross (16-6, 6-2 Patriot League) held the lead for the majority of the first half, but Navy (10-11, 2-6) scored nine of the final 11 points of the half to go into the locker rooms with a 29-28 advantage.
Navy's offense started to click early in the second half as the Mids opened the half on a 13-4 run to take a 42-32 lead with 16:25 to play. ?Holy Cross slowly chipped away at the Navy lead and held Navy scoreless for over five minutes to turn a 48-42 Navy lead into a 57-51 Crusader advantage with 4:59 left in the game. ?
Later, the Crusaders took a 59-55 lead with 3:29 left on the clock after Katie O'Keefe made a pair of free throws. ?Navy quickly scored the next five points and took a 60-59 lead on a layup from Roseti (So., Williamsville, N.Y.) with just 1:24 to play in the game. ?The game became tied at 60-60 when Amanda Abraham sank one of two free throws for Holy Cross with just over one minute to play. ?
Navy came away empty on the next possession as Roseti missed a shot with 35 seconds to play. ?Holy Cross worked the clock down and Mary Rose Campbell was fouled as she attempted an inside shot with eight seconds to play. ?She converted both free throws to give the Crusaders a two-point advantage. ?Navy inbounded the ball to Maile Shimoda (So., Orange, Calif.) who drove three-quarters of the court before dishing it to Roseti for her ill-fated attempt at the buzzer.
"Everything went right on the last possession except the ball going in," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. ?"We have been in so many of these close games this season where we do everything right except the ball doesn't fall for us. ?Adrienne had a great shot at it. ?It ?was right on line for her."
"I felt good about the shot," said Roseti. ?"It just popped out for us."
Navy has lost the last three games to Holy Cross by a total of six points. ?Last season's game in Annapolis ended with a one-point Holy Cross victory as Roseti's 15-foot shot at the buzzer of overtime rimmed out, as well. ?Earlier this season in Worcester, Holy Cross emerged with an 82-79 victory in overtime. ?
The miss marred an otherwise great game by Roseti who scored a season-high 17 points and tied her season-high with nine rebounds. ?Roseti was joined in double figures on the Navy side by Bryanna Herring (So., Columbia, Md.) with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Courtney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) with 14 points and seven rebounds. ?Lisa Steinmetz (Jr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) added a season-high nine points and four steals.
Holy Cross was led in scoring by O'Keefe who tallied 16 points and Abraham who finished with 12.
Holy Cross shot 60 percent from the field in the second half and converted just under 50 percent of its shots for the game. ?The Crusaders were 15-of-22 from the foul line (68.2 percent), while Navy was just 6-of-14 from the free throw line. ?Navy entered the game leading the league in free throw percentage at 75 percent, but shot a season-low 42.9 percent on the afternoon. ?It was the lowest free throw percentage for Navy since the Mids shot 38.5 percent, Dec. 21, 1999 against American, a span of 71 games.
The Mids will take to the road for their next two games, a Wednesday night game at Bucknell, as well as an evening contest next Saturday at Lehigh.
