Women's Hoops Falls to Army in Star Game

The Navy women's basketball team (13-14, 5-9 in the Patriot League) picked a bad day to have one of its worst shooting performances of the year as the Mids fell to Army (10-17, 5-9 in the Patriot League) in the Star-Game, 75-67, in front of 1,789 fans at Christl Arena in West Point. The victory gave Army a sweep of the doubleheader as the Army men defeated Navy, 73-63, in the first game. It is the first time since 1992 that Army has won both star games.
"We just couldn't overcome our poor start today," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "We were playing catch-up all day.
Navy managed just 11 points the first 14:30 of the game and trailed 21-11 after a Katie Macfarlane basket. The Mids did close the half with a 12-8 run to go into the locker room down 29-23. Army shot 44 percent in the first half (12-27), while Navy connected on just 28 percent (7-25) of its shots.
The cold shooting continued in the second half as Army went on an 18-10 run to start the second stanza, going up 47-33 with 13:44 left on a Macfarlane basket. Navy never really threatened after that, closing to within five once (62-57) on two Courtney Davidson free throws with 2:44 remaining, but Army scored the next six points to put the game away.
Macfarlane led the Black Knights with a game-high 26 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Halaevalu Helu scored 14 points and grabbed 11
rebounds, while Christina Gassman added 14 points.
Navy received a fine performance off the bench from sophomore center Bryanna Herring, who scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Navy starters (Davidson, Adrienne Roseti, Maile Shimoda, Lisa Steinmetz and Alison Luchsinger) shot a combined 11-48 (23 percent) from the floor. Davidson was 3-16 and Shimoda 3-13. Navy shot 31 percent (21-68) from the floor.
"We wanted to win this game as much as they did," said Herring. "We came ready to play and we knew what to do, but for some reason we couldn't put it all together."
The Mids will play Bucknell in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament on Friday evening at 5 p.m. at Show Place Arena.
