Women's Basketball to Face Bucknell in League Tourney

Game Information
The Navy women's basketball team will open the 2002 Patriot League Tournament Friday at 5 p.m. at The Show Place Arena with a quarterfinal contest against Bucknell.
The winner of Friday's game will advance to the semifinals to face the winner of the Lehigh-Army game, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Navy Review
Navy saw its three-game winning streak come to an abrupt end Saturday with a 75-67 loss at Army. Navy's offense struggled to find its rhythm, shooting just 30 percent for the game.
Bryanna Herring played just 21 minutes but made the most of her time on the floor, totaling 20 points and 11 rebounds. Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson joined Herring in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Davidson now has scored in double figures in 11-straight games (176 points, 16 ppg) and in 24 games on the year. She is ranked first in the Patriot League in free throw percentage (89.2%), second in three-point field goal percentage (40%) and third in both three-pointers made a game (2.38) and in scoring (17.6 ppg). In addition, she is ranked 11th nationally in free throw percentage, as well as 30th in three-point field goal percentage.
Herring posted 20 or more points for the sixth time this season. Over the last two games Herring has played just 31 minutes, but has scored 31 points and hauled in 19 boards. She continues to lead the Patriot League in offensive rebounds a game (3.78) and stands third in blocked shots (1.30).
As a team, Navy's offensive and defensive averages are virtually identical to one another. The Mids are scoring 66.7 points and allowing 67.4 points per game. Navy is grabbing 38.4 rebounds a game, while Navy foes are averaging 38.3 boards a game. The Mids have converted on 150 three-point field goals this season, just two less than their opponents have hit.
Navy is shooting 38.6 percent from the field, 33 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74 percent from the free throw line.
The Navy defense is allowing opponents to shoot 41.4 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from three-point land.
Bucknell Preview
Bucknell enters the postseason with an 18-9 record on the season, as well as a second-place finish in the Patriot League with an 11-3 mark. The Bison posted a 6-1 record in the second half of the league season.
Bucknell is led by Molly Creamer, who tops the team and the league in both scoring and assists with averages of 22.7 points and 5.7 assists per game, respectively.
As a team, Bucknell is averaging 71.7 points per game and is shooting 44.3 percent from the field, as well as 34.9 percent from three-point territory and 75.3 percent from the foul line.
Series History
After winning 13 of the first 18 meetings in the series, Navy has lost the last eight games against Bucknell. Navy has not defeated the Bison since January of 1999.
The two teams have split a pair of meetings played at neutral sites.

Navy Tournament History
Navy has posted an 8-10 tournament record in its 10 seasons of competition in the Patriot League, including a 6-4 mark in first-round games. The Mids have dropped three-straight games in the tournament, dating back to the championship game of the 1999 event.
Friday's game will be the second between Navy and Bucknell, with Bucknell being the No. 2 seed and Navy holding the No. 7 seed in each game. The lone previous meeting was a March 3, 2000, matchup in Easton, Pa., with the Bison defeating the Mids in the quarterfinals, 62-43.
Navy has posted a 2-9 record in tournament games in which it is the lower-seeded team, as well as an 0-4 march when matched up against the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
The Midshipmen have advanced to a pair of tournament championship games (1998, 1999), and won at least won game in the tournament for six-straight seasons from 1994-99.
Close Calls
Fourteen of Navy's 27 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less (6-8 record), with nine games decided by four points or less (3-6 record).
Navy has had eight games decided on the final possession of games (3-5 record), with a ninth game -- at San Diego State -- not finalized until the Aztecs converted one of two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock for a 73-69 victory, as well as a 10th -- at Lafayette -- when Navy made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to secure a 50-45 win.
Navy had five of its 14 league games go down to the final possession. Four of Navy's nine league losses have been by a total of nine points.

Service Selections
Navy's senior class made its service selections on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.
Women's basketball team captain Kristen Kavanaugh selected Marine Corps (ground) and will report to Quantico, Va., to begin The Basic School July 17 with Echo Company.
Classmate Elaine Jensen will be a surface warfare office aboard the USS Wasp. She begins her next phase of schooling Nov. 2.
Captain Kav
One of the top highlights of this season was Navy's Dec. 5 game at Marshall. Navy made the nine-hour bus trip to allow team captain Kristen Kavanaugh to play near her hometown of Ironton, Ohio, about 20 minutes from Huntington, W. Va.
The trip almost was for naught as Kavanaugh was battling an illness throughout the trip. Despite that, she entered the game midway through the first half, played two minutes and drilled a wide-open three-pointer.

On the Bench
There have been quite a few changes to the Navy coaching staff since the first day of practice.
First, Glenn Rigney joined the Navy staff in early November. Rigney had served as varsity head coach of the girl's basketball program at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1993, winning four district titles and compiling a 190-59 record.
Next, Lt. Heather Lee left the coaching staff following Navy's Jan. 12 game against Bucknell to return to active duty. She is on her way to being the Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS John Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. The '93 graduate of the Academy still ranks among the Navy leaders in several statistics, including third in career three-point field goals made.
Finally, Navy's Jan. 26th game against Army marked the last game for assistant coach Colleen Bentz. In her sixth season at Navy, Bentz left the team to report to Quantico, Va., to begin training at the FBI Academy.
Adrienne Roseti
One of Navy's more consistent players of late has been Adrienne Roseti. Now fully healed from a lower left leg infection that caused her to miss four games from Jan. 2-12, Roseti has scored 10 or more points in five of the last seven games, as well as grabbing seven or more rebounds in six of the last seven games.

Seeing the World
It seems as if the Navy women's basketball team has spent the majority of the season on the road. The year began with Navy playing six of its first seven games on the road, with all six road games being played in different states. Navy then closed its season by playing four of its last six games away from Alumni Hall.
The Mids have played 15 road games in nine different states this season -- South Carolina (College of Charleston), Florida (Jacksonville), California (San Diego State), Maryland (Towson), New York (Albany, Columbia, Colgate, Army), West Virginia (Marshall), Colorado (Air Force), Massachusetts (Holy Cross), Pennsylvania (Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette) -- as well as in the District of Columbia (American).
All told, the Mids have traveled a total of 15,048 miles this season.

On the Road
Navy has won five road games this season, after winning three last year and just one during the 1999-2000 campaign. It is the most wins away from home for Navy since winning seven games during the 1998-99 season.

Game-Winning Baskets
Courtney Davidson's two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in Navy's Jan. 23 game against Lafayette marked the fifth time this season she has scored the game-winning basket for the Midshipmen. It also marked the second time this year she has scored the game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

In the Classroom
Courtney Davidson has excelled this season both on the basketball court and in the classroom. Navy's leading scorer, Davidson has been named to the Superintendent's List in each of her first three completed semesters at Navy.
In addition, last week she was named to the Verizon Academic All-America District 2 Second Team for women's basketball.
Davidson caries a 3.66 cumulative grade point average in political science.
Big Halves
Navy's 51 first-half points in its Feb. 13 game against Colgate marked the first time in three seasons the Mids have totaled at least 50 points in a half. Navy last cracked the 50-point mark Feb. 27, 1999, against Army (50 points).
Accepting Charity
Navy's free throw percentage of 74 percent not only ranks second in the Patriot League, it also puts the Mids on pace to set a new Navy single-season record.
Twice this season Navy has won games by free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the contest (Maile Shimoda vs. UMBC, D16; Courtney Davidson vs. Lafayette, J23).
o Colgate, F13 -- Navy shot a poor 20-of-33 in the game (60.6%), but converted 9-of-12 free throws in the last 3:01 to seal the victory.
o Bucknell, J12 -- The Mids shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line, the second-highest team free throw percentage in Navy history (trails only a 24-of-25, 96-percent performance, Dec. 7, 1998 vs. Delaware).
o Jacksonville, N18 -- Converted 14-of-15 second-half free throws and 21-of-24 attempts.
o Marshall, D5 -- Navy made 17-of-20 second-half free throws, as well as 22-of-26.

Three-Point Shots
Navy is continuing to have great success from behind the three-point line this season, one year after it set a Patriot League record with 176 three-point field goals made.
Individually last season, both Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson smashed the Navy freshman record of 30 three-point field goals, finishing with 48 and 47, respectively.
This season, Navy has made 150 three-point field goals, an average of 5.5 per game and the second-highest total in school history. Davidson has accounted for 62 triples this season, with Shimoda second with 45.
Navy drilled 11 three-pointers both at Air Force (J5) and at Holy Cross (J8), tying the mark for the fourth-most triples made in a game (Navy record is 14). The Mids have made six or more three-pointers in 12 games this year. Three of the top-six three-point performances in Navy history have been set this season.
The Midshipmen have made at least one three-point field goal in 136 consecutive games. The last time Navy was held without a three pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.

Navy's Rallies
Navy has rallied from both an eight-point and seven-point halftime deficit to win games this season, two of the largest rallies in Navy history.
The Mids trailed 41-34 at intermission to Appalachian State (N21) before rallying to post a 72-71 victory. Navy also found itself down 41-33 at Columbia (D30) before outscoring the Lions 48-29 in the second half for an 81-70 win.
Now in its 25th season, Navy has rallied to win games from halftime deficits of seven points or more just 13 times, with its largest comeback being 10 points (Feb. 12, 1987 vs. Towson; Dec. 20, 1998 vs. Mississippi).

Bryanna Herring
Bryanna Herring's streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points came to an end Jan. 16 at Lehigh. She had scored in double figures in 12-straight games and averaged 15.9 points (191) and 7.3 rebounds per game (88) over that span, including averages of 17.8 points and 7 rebounds a game over the final four contests.
After a mini slump, Herring closed the season with back-to-back strong games, totaling 11 points and eight rebounds in just 10 minutes of action against American (Feb. 20), as well as 20 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of playing time at Army (Feb. 23).

Navy Depth
Don't be surprised to see a lot of players shuttle in and out of the Navy lineup this season. Head coach Joe Sanchez has used a minimum of nine players in each of Navy's games this season, with 10 or more players taking to the court in all but one contest.

Scoring Down the Stretch
Courtney Davidson now has a six-point lead over Maile Shimoda for the most points scored during the last five minutes of games. Most recently Davidson scored four free throws and a field goal in the last five minutes of Navy's game at Army, while Shimoda drilled a three-pointer and made a pair of free throws.
On the year Davidson has scored 79 points in the last five minutes of games, six points more than fellow sophomore Shimoda.
Shimoda, though, continues to hold a slim lead over Davidson for the most free throws made in the closing minutes of games. Shimoda has converted 43 free throws in the last five minutes, while Davidson has made 41. Over half of Shimoda's 82 free throws have been made in the final five minutes of games.
Assisting the Team
Both Lisa Steinmetz and Maile Shimoda have continued their climbs up Navy's all-time assist chart. Steinmetz has totaled 183 assists in her career to rank 13th in Navy history, while Shimoda has dished out 180 helpers to move into a tie for 14th place.
Shimoda has totaled 103 assists this season, the first 100-assist season by a Mid since Kim Jackson recorded 136 in the 1993-94 season.

Lauren Zapf
Lauren Zapf scored a career-high 11 points in Navy's game against American Feb. 20. The junior shooting guard drilled a trio of three-pointers in a span of just over two minutes to help cap off a 20-3 second-half Navy run which helped secure the victory.
Previously, Zapf's best scoring output was a nine-point outburst against High Point (Nov. 20, 2000), while her 2001-02 season high had been seven points against UMBC (Dec. 16).
Elaine Jensen
Perhaps the emotion of senior night for Elaine Jensen carried over into the start of Navy's Feb. 20 game against American. The senior from Coarsegold, Calif., made the most of her first start of the season by scoring the first six points for Navy and grabbing five rebounds in the first five minutes of the game. She ended the game with a career-high tying 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, while also grabbing a season-best eight rebounds in just 11 minutes of playing time.
The American marked the second time this season Jensen has finished a game perfect from the field. Earlier this year against Army she too was 5-of-5 from the field in only 12 minutes of court time.
Maile Shimoda
Maile Shimoda had the best all-around shooting night of her career Jan. 29 at American. Shimoda connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field -- including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line -- and sank 6-of-7 free throws for a career-high 28 points. In addition, her six treys on the night also marked a personal best.

by being named MVP of the Navy Classic. She scored 10 points and tied a career high with eight assists against UMES (D19), then scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the title game versus Winthrop (D20).

After totaling just 39 blocks all of last season, Navy has rejected 79 shots this year. This is the most blocks by a Navy team since the 1994-95 squad totaled 82 blocks.
Leading the way with blocked shots this season has been Bryanna Herring and Adrienne Roseti. Herring leads the team with 35, with Roseti second at 23.
Herring's 35 blocks this season is a new Navy record for most blocks by a sophomore, while both players also have moved into the top-seven for most blocks in a Navy career.

Sanchez Surpasses Games #200 and #700
Navy's Feb. 6 game at Bucknell was Joe Sanchez's 700th of his career as a collegiate head coach. Earlier this season he coached his 200th game at Navy (Nov. 21, Appalachian State).
