Women's Basketball Game Notes - Navy at Bucknell

Navy Outlook

The Navy women's basketball team will make the first of three trips in a span of 10 days to the state of Pennsylvania Wednesday when the Midshipmen play at Bucknell in a 5:15 p.m. game in Lewisburg.

Navy Review

Navy dropped its second-straight nailbiter Saturday afternoon, losing a 62-60 decision to Holy Cross in Alumni Hall.

Adrienne Roseti and Bryanna Herring led Navy with 17 points apiece, with Roseti just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Courtney Davidson scored 14 points for the Mids against the Crusaders, while adding seven boards.

Since posting back-to-back games in which she scored in single digits (Jan. 12-16), Davidson has scored 19, 22, 14, 28 and 14 points in the last five games, an average of 19.4 points per game. She recorded the 700th point of her career in Saturday's contest.

Davidson is ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring (18.9 ppg), first in free throw percentage (91.2%), second in three-point field goal percentage (40.2%), and second in three-point field goals made a game (2.8). In addition, she is nationally ranked in all four statistics, with top-10 rankings in free throw (second) and three-point field goal (10th) percentages.

Herring scored in double figures for the 11th-straight game, as well as for the 16th time this season.

On the year, Herring ranks second on the team with 14 points per game, and leads the Mids with 6.7 rebounds a game and 30 blocked shots. Herring ranks first in the Patriot League with 3.62 offensive rebounds a game, as well as second with 1.43 blocks per game.

Lisa Steinmetz had her third-straight strong outing on Saturday, totalling a season-high nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals against the Crusaders.

Roseti had her best game of the season Saturday, tying her career-best with seven field goals made and scoring a season-high 17 points.

As a team, Navy is scoring and allowing 67 points per game, as well as grabbing and allowing 38 rebounds a game.

Navy is shooting 39.2 percent from the field, 32.6 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74.8 percent from the free throw line.

The Navy defense is allowing opponents to shoot 41.6 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three-point land.

Navy is averaging 5.8 three-pointers a game, narrowly ahead of the 5.7 a game Navy is allowing.

Bucknell Preview

Bucknell prepares to play host to the Midshipmen with an 13-8 record on the season, as well as a 6-2 mark in the Patriot League.

As a team, Bucknell is averaging 69.6 points per game, and is shooting 43.2 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from the three-point line and 74.8 percent from the free throw line. Bucknell opponents are scoring 66.1 points per game, shooting 41.7 percent from the field, and 29.4 percent from behind the three-point stripe.

Molly Creamer leads the Bison -- and the Patriot League -- in scoring with 22 points per game. She also is the BU leader with 115 assists on the year. Vicki Quimby leads the Bison with 6.8 rebounds a game, narrowly edging Monique LeBlanc's mark of 6.5 boards a game.

Series History

Bucknell has won the last seven meetings in the series in which Navy holds a slim 13-12 advantage in. Navy has not defeated Bucknell since a 65-58 overtime victory in January of 1999. In addition, the Mids have dropped three-straight games in Lewisburg.

Service Selections

Navy's senior class made its service selections on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.

Women's basketball team captain Kristen Kavanaugh selected Marine Corps (ground) and will report to Quantico, Va., to begin The Basic School July 17 with Echo Company.

Classmate Elaine Jensen will be a surface warfare office aboard the USS Wasp. She begins her next phase of schooling Nov. 2.

On the Bench

There have been quite a few changes to the Navy coaching staff since the first day of practice.

First, Glenn Rigney joined the Navy staff in early November. Rigney had served as varsity head coach of the girl's basketball program at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1993, winning four district titles and compiling a 190-59 record.

Lt. Heather Lee left the coaching staff following Navy's Jan. 12 game against Bucknell to return to active duty. She is on her way to being the Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS John Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. The '93 graduate of the Academy still ranks among the Navy leaders in several statistics, including third in career three-point field goals made.

Navy's Jan. 26th game against Army marked the final game for assistant coach Colleen Bentz. In her sixth season at Navy, Bentz left the team to report to Quantico, Va., to begin training in the FBI Academy.

Ironman Awards

Courtney Davidson has played the entire game in seven games this season, including all 45 minutes of Navy's overtime game at Holy Cross.

Maile Shimoda has played the full 40 minutes in five games on the season.

Seeing the World

The Navy women's basketball team has spent the majority of the season on the road. The year began with Navy playing six of its first seven games on the road, with all six road games being played in different states.

So far this season, the Mids have played 11 road games in eight different states including South Carolina (College of Charleston), Florida (Jacksonville), California (San Diego State), Maryland (Towson), New York (Albany, Columbia, Colgate), West Virginia (Marshall), Colorado (Air Force) and Massachusetts (Holy Cross), as well as the District of Columbia (American).

All told, the Mids will play 15 road games in nine different states this season, traveling a total of 15,048 miles.

Navy already has won four road games this season after winning three last year and just one during the 1999-2000 campaign. With one more victory away from Alumni Hall, Navy will match its total of road wins for the 1998-99 season.

Sanchez to Coach Game #700

Wednesday's game at Bucknell will be Navy head coach Joe Sanchez's 700th of his career. Earlier this season he coached his 200th game at Navy Nov. 21 against Appalachian State.

For Starters

Navy has opened games with seven different starting lineup combinations this season. Nine different players have started games this year, with only Maile Shimoda and Bryanna Herring receiving the starting nod in all 21 games.

Adrienne Roseti

Adrienne Roseti had a strong game Saturday against Holy Cross, scoring a season-high 17 points and just missing a double-double with season-high tying nine rebounds.

Game-Winning Baskets

Courtney Davidson's two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in Navy's Jan. 23 game against Lafayette marked the fifth time this season she has scored the game-winning basket for the Midshipmen. It also marked the second time this year she has scored the game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Lisa Steinmetz

Lisa Steinmetz has put together three of her best games of the season. After scoring six points against Army (J26) and at American (J29), Steinmetz scored a season-high nine points against Holy Cross (F2), while also dishing out four assists in all three contests.

She is averaging 7 points, 4 assists and 3.7 rebounds a game in those three contests.

Navy is connecting on a Patriot League-best 74.8 percent of its free throw attempts, which also puts Mids on pace to set a new school record.

Twice this season, Navy has won games by free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the contest (Maile Shimoda vs. UMBC, D16; Courtney Davidson vs. Lafayette, J23).

o Bucknell, J12 -- The Mids shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line, the second-highest team free throw percentage in Navy history (trails only a 24-of-25, 96-percent performance, Dec. 7, 1998 vs. Delaware).

o Jacksonville, N18 -- Converted 14-of-15 second-half free throws and 21-of-24 attempts.

o Marshall, D5 -- Navy made 17-of-20 second-half free throws, as well as 22-of-26.

oColumbia, D30 -- The Mids made 14-of-14 free throws in the final 1:52, as well as 25 of its 30 shots from the line.

Individually, Courtney Davidson, whose 76.7 percent shooting from the free throw line last season was the second-best percentage by a Navy freshman, leads the league and is ranked second nationally at 91.2 percent.

Three-Point Shots

Navy is continuing to have great success from behind the three-point line this season, one year after it set a Patriot League record with 176 three-point field goals made.

Individually last season, both Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson smashed the Navy freshman record of 30 three-point field goals, finishing with 48 and 47, respectively.

This season, Navy has made 122 three-point field goals, an average of 5.8 per game. Davidson has accounted for 56 triples this season, with Shimoda second with 37.

Navy drilled 11 three-pointers both at Air Force (J5) and at Holy Cross (J8), tying the mark for the fourth-most triples made in a game (Navy record is 14). The Mids have made six or more three-pointers in 11 games this year. Three of the top-six three-point performances in Navy history have been set this season.

The Midshipmen have made at least one three-point field goal in 130 consecutive games. The last time Navy was held without a three pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.

Bryanna Herring

Bryanna Herring has continued her strong play since the start of the 2001-02 season. She has scored in double figures in 11-straight games, while averaging 15.5 points (171) and 7.2 rebounds per game (79) over that span.

o Has shot 50% or better from the field in 13 games, 60% or better in seven games. She is shooting 55 percent (38-of-69) from the field over the last six games.

Navy's Rallies

Navy has rallied from both an eight-point and seven-point halftime deficit to win games this season.

The Mids trailed 41-34 at intermission to Appalachian State (N21) before rallying to post a 72-71 victory. Navy also found itself down 41-33 at Columbia (D30) before outscoring the Lions 48-29 in the second half for an 81-70 win.

Now in its 25th season, Navy has rallied to win games from halftime deficits of seven points or more just 13 times, with its largest comeback being 10 points (Feb. 12, 1987 vs. Towson; Dec. 20, 1998 vs. Mississippi).

Rallies - Part II

Four times this season the Mids have rallied from double-digit deficits, three times to take the lead and once to close to within one point. This is no surprise, as Navy accomplished this feat five times last year.

Navy Depth

Don't be surprised to see a lot of players shuttle in and out of the Navy lineup this season. Head coach Joe Sanchez has used a minimum of nine players in each of Navy's games this season, with 11 or more players taking to the court in all but four contests.

Second-Half Team

Navy has proven to be a second-half team this season, having scored more points in the second half of 14 of its 21 games. Navy is averaging 30.6 points per first half, but is scoring 35.9 points per second half. Navy has scored 40 or more points in the first half of three games this year, but has surpassed 40 points in the second half of seven games.

Maile Shimoda

Maile Shimoda had the best all-around shooting nights of her career last week at American. Shimoda connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field -- including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line -- and sank 6-of-7 free throws for a career high 28 points. In addition, her six treys on the night also marked a personal best.

Season Highlights

o Capped off her pre-holiday slate of games by being named MVP of the Navy Classic. She scored 10 points and tied a career high with eight assists against UMES (D19), then scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the title game versus Winthrop (D20).

o Army, J26 -- Career-high eight rebounds.

o Lafayette, J23 -- Totalled four assists and swiped career-high five steals.

o Colgate, J19 -- Scored 19 points, made four three-point field goals and added five assists.

o UMBC, D16 -- Scored the last-five points of the game, including the decisive two free throws with 7.2 seconds left in the game.

o Marshall, D5 -- Shimoda grabbed a then career-high seven rebounds and drilled a four three-point field goals on her way to Navy scoring honors with 19 points.

o Appalachian St., N21-- Scored all but three of her team-high 18 points after halftime, while accounting for six of Navy's final-10 points.

Block Party

After totaling just 39 blocks all of last season, Navy players already have rejected 57 shots this season, an average of 2.7 per game.

On its current pace the Mids would block a total of 75 shots this season, which would be the most by a Navy team since the 1994-95 team totalled 82 blocks.

Leading the way with blocked shots this season has been Bryanna Herring and Adrienne Roseti. Herring leads the team with 30, with Roseti second at 14.

Herring's 30 blocks this season ties the Navy record for most blocks by a sophomore, while both players also have moved into the top-seven for most blocks in a Navy career.
