The Navy women's basketball team will look to stop its three-game losing streak Saturday when the Midshipmen play at Lehigh in a 5:30 p.m. game. The contest can be heard live on WNAV-AM 1430, as well as www.navysports.com(.)

Navy Review

Navy saw a nine-point second-half lead disappear in a 20-0 and 41-15 Bison run in a 83-71 loss Wednesday night at Bucknell.

Navy's sophomore class accounted for all 71 of Navy's points against Bucknell.

Bryanna Herring led Navy in scoring with 20 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Maile Shimoda recorded 17 points on the night, with Adrienne Roseti totalling 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high five assists.

Courtney Davidson scored 11 points for the Mids against Bucknell, the sixth-straight contest she has reached double figures in.

Davidson is ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring (18.5 ppg), first in free throw percentage (91.2%), second in three-point field goal percentage (43.8%), and second in three-point field goals made a game (2.71). In addition, she is nationally ranked in all four statistics, with a No. 4 ranking in free throw percentage.

Herring's 20 points against the Bison marked the 12th-straight game she has finished in double figures, as well as the 17th time this season.

On the year, Herring ranks second on the team with 14.2 points per game and leads the Mids with 6.8 rebounds a game and 30 blocked shots. Herring ranks first in the Patriot League with 3.73 offensive rebounds a game, as well as third with 1.41 blocks per game.

Roseti totalled 14 points Wednesday night, her second-straight double-figure scoring game. Her 10 rebounds marked her first double-double of the 2001-02 campaign, as well as the eighth of her career.

As a team, Navy's offensive and defensive averages are virtually identical to one another. The Mids are scoring 67.1 points per game and allowing 67.7 points per game. Both Navy and Navy foes are averaging 37.9 rebounds a game. Navy is averaging 5.7 three-pointers a game, narrowly ahead of the 5.6 a game Navy is allowing.

Navy is shooting 39.2 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from behind the three-point line, and 74.9 percent from the free throw line.

The Navy defense is allowing opponents to shoot 41.8 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from three-point land.

Lehigh Preview

Lehigh prepares to play host to the Midshipmen with a 10-12 record on the season, as well as a 6-3 mark in the Patriot League.

As a team, Lehigh is averaging 63.6 points per game, and is shooting 40.1 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from the three-point line and 74.2 percent from the free throw line. Lehigh opponents are scoring 67.6 points per game, shooting 41.3 percent from the field, and 34.4 percent from behind the three-point stripe.

Anne Tierney leads the Mountain Hawks in both scoring -- 15 ppg -- and rebounding -- 9.6 rpg.

Series History

Navy holds a 15-11 lead in the series, but has dropped four of the last five meetings. Navy has a 7-6 record in games played in Bethlehem, with Navy winning a 70-63 decision last season.

Close Calls

Twelve of Navy's 22 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less (5-7 record), with nine games decided by four points or less (3-6 record).

Navy has had eight games decided on the final possession of games (3-5 record), with a ninth game -- at San Diego State -- not finalized until the Aztecs converted one of two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock for a 73-69 victory.

Service Selections

Navy's senior class made its service selections on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25.

Women's basketball team captain Kristen Kavanaugh selected Marine Corps (ground) and will report to Quantico, Va., to begin The Basic School July 17 with Echo Company.

Classmate Elaine Jensen will be a surface warfare office aboard the USS Wasp. She begins her next phase of schooling Nov. 2.

On the Bench

There have been quite a few changes to the Navy coaching staff since the first day of practice.

First, Glenn Rigney joined the Navy staff in early November. Rigney had served as varsity head coach of the girl's basketball program at the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1993, winning four district titles and compiling a 190-59 record.

Next, Lt. Heather Lee left the coaching staff following Navy's Jan. 12 game against Bucknell to return to active duty. She is on her way to being the Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS John Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. The '93 graduate of the Academy still ranks among the Navy leaders in several statistics, including third in career three-point field goals made.

Finally, Navy's Jan. 26th game against Army marked the last game for assistant coach Colleen Bentz. In her sixth season at Navy, Bentz left the team to report to Quantico, Va., to begin training at the FBI Academy.

Ironman Awards

Courtney Davidson has played the entire game in seven games this season, including all 45 minutes of Navy's overtime game at Holy Cross.

Maile Shimoda has played the full 40 minutes in six games on the season, including each of the last two and five of the last eight. She played the entire game once last season as a freshman, never leaving the floor in Navy's overtime loss to Holy Cross.

Seeing the World

It seems as if the Navy women's basketball team has spent the majority of the season on the road. The year began with Navy playing six of its first seven games on the road, with all six road games being played in different states. Navy closes its season by playing four of its last six games away from Alumni Hall.

The Mids have played 12 road games in nine different states this season -- South Carolina (College of Charleston), Florida (Jacksonville), California (San Diego State), Maryland (Towson), New York (Albany, Columbia, Colgate), West Virginia (Marshall), Colorado (Air Force), Massachusetts (Holy Cross), Pennsylvania (Bucknell) -- as well as in the District of Columbia (American).

All told, the Mids will play 15 road games in nine different states this season, traveling a total of 15,048 miles.

Navy already has won four road games this season after winning three last year and just one during the 1999-2000 campaign. With one more victory away from Alumni Hall, Navy will match its total of road wins for the 1998-99 season.

Sanchez Coached Game #700

Wednesday's game at Bucknell was Joe Sanchez's 700th of his career as a collegiate head coach. Earlier this season he coached his 200th game at Navy (Nov. 21, Appalachian St.).

Navy has opened games with seven different starting lineup combinations this season. Nine different players have started games this year, with only Maile Shimoda and Bryanna Herring receiving the starting nod in all 22 games.

Adrienne Roseti

Adrienne Roseti has played perhaps her best two games of the season in Navy's last two outings. Roseti scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed what was then a season-best nine rebounds Saturday against Holy Cross, followed by a 14-point, 10-rebound, five-assist effort Wednesday at Bucknell.

Roseti missed four games from Jan. 2-12 due to an infected bruise on her lower left leg, but has played at least 20 minutes in six of the seven games since her return.

Game-Winning Baskets

Courtney Davidson's two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining in Navy's Jan. 23 game against Lafayette marked the fifth time this season she has scored the game-winning basket for the Midshipmen. It also marked the second time this year she has scored the game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Navy's free throw percentage of 74.9 percent not only ranks second in the Patriot League, it also puts the Mids on pace to set a new Navy single-season record.

Twice this season, Navy has won games by free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the contest (Maile Shimoda vs. UMBC, D16; Courtney Davidson vs. Lafayette, J23).

o Bucknell, J12 -- The Mids shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line, the second-highest team free throw percentage in Navy history (trails only a 24-of-25, 96-percent performance, Dec. 7, 1998 vs. Delaware).

o Jacksonville, N18 -- Converted 14-of-15 second-half free throws and 21-of-24 attempts.

o Marshall, D5 -- Navy made 17-of-20 second-half free throws, as well as 22-of-26.

Individually, Courtney Davidson, whose 76.7 percent shooting from the free throw line last season was the second-best percentage by a Navy freshman, leads the league and is ranked second nationally at 91.2 percent.

Three-Point Shots

Navy is continuing to have great success from behind the three-point line this season, one year after it set a Patriot League record with 176 three-point field goals made.

Individually last season, both Maile Shimoda and Courtney Davidson smashed the Navy freshman record of 30 three-point field goals, finishing with 48 and 47, respectively.

This season, Navy has made 126 three-point field goals, an average of 5.7 per game. Davidson has accounted for 57 triples this season, with Shimoda second with 39.

Navy drilled 11 three-pointers both at Air Force (J5) and at Holy Cross (J8), tying the mark for the fourth-most triples made in a game (Navy record is 14). The Mids have made six or more three-pointers in 11 games this year. Three of the top-six three-point performances in Navy history have been set this season.

The Midshipmen have made at least one three-point field goal in 131 consecutive games. The last time Navy was held without a three pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.

Bryanna Herring

Bryanna Herring's 20-point, nine-rebound effort Wednesday at Bucknell was just the latest in a long string of solid performances by the sophomore. She has scored in double figures in 12-straight games, while averaging 15.9 points (191) and 7.3 rebounds per game (88) over that span, including averages of 17.8 points and 7 rebounds a game over the last four.

Navy's Rallies

Navy has rallied from both an eight-point and seven-point halftime deficit to win games this season.

The Mids trailed 41-34 at intermission to Appalachian State (N21) before rallying to post a 72-71 victory. Navy also found itself down 41-33 at Columbia (D30) before outscoring the Lions 48-29 in the second half for an 81-70 win.

Now in its 25th season, Navy has rallied to win games from halftime deficits of seven points or more just 13 times, with its largest comeback being 10 points (Feb. 12, 1987 vs. Towson; Dec. 20, 1998 vs. Mississippi).

Four times this season the Mids have rallied from double-digit deficits, three times to take the lead and once to close to within one point. This is no surprise, as Navy accomplished this feat five times last year.

Don't be surprised to see a lot of players shuttle in and out of the Navy lineup this season. Head coach Joe Sanchez has used a minimum of nine players in each of Navy's games this season, with 10 or more players taking to the court in all but one contest.

Navy has proven to be a second-half team this season, having scored more points in the second half of 14 of its 22 games. Assisting the Team

Lisa Steinmetz has moved into 14th place in Navy history for the most career assists, while Maile Shimoda is on the verge of moving in the top 15 herself.

Shimoda's 85 assists this season are the most since Kim Jackson recorded 136 during the 1993-94 campaign.

Maile Shimoda

Maile Shimoda had the best all-around shooting night of her career last week at American. Shimoda connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field -- including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line -- and sank 6-of-7 free throws for a career high 28 points. In addition, her six treys on the night also marked a personal best.

o Capped off her pre-holiday slate of games

by being named MVP of the Navy Classic. She scored 10 points and tied a career high with eight assists against UMES (D19), then scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the title game versus Winthrop (D20).

o Army, J26 -- Career-high eight rebounds.

o Lafayette, J23 -- Totalled four assists and swiped career-high five steals.

o Colgate, J19 -- Scored 19 points, made four three-point field goals and added five assists.

o UMBC, D16 -- Scored the last-five points of the game, including the decisive two free throws with 7.2 seconds left in the game.

o Marshall, D5 -- Shimoda grabbed a then career-high seven rebounds and drilled four three-point field goals on her way to Navy scoring honors with 19 points.

o Appalachian St., N21-- Scored all but three of her team-high 18 points after halftime, while accounting for six of Navy's final-10 points.

Block Party

After totalling just 39 blocks all of last season, Navy players already have rejected 59 shots this season, an average of 2.68 per game.

On its current pace the Mids would block a total of 75 shots this season, which would be the most by a Navy team since the 1994-95 squad totalled 82 blocks.
