Wrestling Completes Tobacco Road Sweep Saturday

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Navy wrestling team improved its dual-match record to 9-6 on the 2001-02 campaign with a sweep of North Carolina, 18-16, in Chapel Hill, N.C., and North Carolina State, 24-12, at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh Saturday.
The Mids, who will host Franklin & Marshall Friday night at 7:30 p.m., got off to fast starts in both matches, thanks to victories in each match by Mike Bigrigg (Sr./Santa Ana, Calif.) and Steve Kovach (Jr./Parkesburg, Pa.) in the 197 and heavyweight divisions, respectively. Bigrigg defeated UNC's Austin Wall, 10-4, in Chapel Hill, followed by a match-opening victory over NC State's Jason Gore, 3-2. Kovach rode the Tar Heels' Ryan Adams out of the ring in double overtime for a victory before pinning the Wolfpack's Ngozi Collins 6:35 into the nightcap.
Second-ranked Mark Conley (Sr./Exton, Pa.) was the only other Navy wrestler to score a pair of victories (141-lb. weight class) on the afternoon. Against North Carolina, he scored an 8-3 decision over Brad Byers. Conley completed the sweep when, up 14-3 early in the match, NC State's Ryan McCallum was disqualified for leaving the ring.
In the North Carolina match, Sam Gray (Fr./Essex, Vt.) scored a 3-2 decision over Chris Rodrigues, while Adam Bones (Fr./Placentia, Calif.) pinned Tar Heel James O'Connor 1:41 into the match.
During the nightcap in Raleigh, Mike Simon (Jr./North Canton, Ohio) (133), Luke Lazzo (Jr./Rochester Hills, Mich.) (165) and Travis Manion (So./Doylestown, Pa.) (184) all scored victories over their respective NC State opponents to seal the win for Navy.
"All in all, our guys wrestled very hard today," said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "We received a big win from Gray at UNC, and Bones' pin in the first period was huge. We have good momentum going into our match against Franklin & Marshall, and we expect a lot of fans to be there."
