The Navy men's track team won 11 events on its way to a 107-88 victory over Rutgers, Saturday at Ingram Field in Annapolis. The victory improves Navy's record to 4-0 during the outdoor dual-meet season.
"I was a little surprised by the outcome," said Navy head coach Steve Cooksey. "We were a bit shorthanded due to some injuries and illnesses, but the guys who were here turned in some excellent performances today."
One of the top performers on the day was Thomas Delaney (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.). Navy's outdoor team captain, Delaney set a school record of 17' 3" in the pole vault, which also provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championship.
Among the other competitors Cooksey singled out were Aaron Lanzel, Douglas Kay, Kyle Obrock, Brendan Pool and Carlton Hazelwood.
On the track, Lanzel (Jr., Sugar Grove, Pa.) posted a victory in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.94, Kay (Sr., Amherst, Va.) recorded a time of 48.36 to win the 400-meter run, and Obrock (Fr., Boalsburg, Pa.) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 196' 1".
In the field events, Pool (So., Ocala, Fla.) jumped a season-best 6' 8" to win the high jump, while Hazelwood placed third in the shot put with a toss of 50' 0.75".
Other victors on the day for Navy included C.J. Simonsen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) in the 100-meter dash (11.15), Erik Schmidt (So., Spokane, Wash.) in the one-mile run (3:56.20), Benjamin Morris (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) in the 5,000-meter run (14:54.22), Brian Dembinski (Sr., McAlester, Okla.) in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (55.38), Ben Glazer (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa) in the steeplechase (9:28.10), and David Hunt (So., Rochester, N.Y.) in both the long jump (21' 10") and triple jump (44' 1.25").
"Coach (Al) Cantello told the team the other day to not lose their focus and keep fighting for every available point," said Cooksey. "They did a great job of that today."
The men's track team will be back in action April 5-6 at the Texas Relays, and will return to Ingram Field April 13 to face Colgate, Loyola and American.
