BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Navy wrestling team began its quest for an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) title at the EIWA Championship Saturday afternoon at Lehigh's Stabler Arena.
Senior team captain Mark Conley, the nation's top-ranked wrestler in the 141-pound weight class, won all three of his matches and will face Army's Phil Simpson tomorrow for the EIWA title in the second and final day of competition. Conley defeated Arash Nejafi of Columbia by fall in his first match of the day 5:46 into the match. Next, Conley defeated eighth-seeded Tristan Boyd of Lehigh, 11-2, before knocking off No. 5 Juan Venturi of Princeton, 15-4. Conley has defeated Simpson twice in as many meetings this season, and will look to make it three in a row Sunday.
Sophomore Mike Carbonaro (157-lb.), senior Mike Bigrigg (197), and juniors Luke Lazzo (165) and Steve Kovach (HWT) are all in tomorrow's consolation semi-finals, and can finish no worse than sixth at the championship. Carbonaro, seeded sixth in his weight class, lost his second match of the day to third-seeded Gabe Webster of Cornell by a 4-1 score. With his pair of victories in the consolation bracket, Carbonaro will take on Army's Jeremy Connor in Sunday's consolation semi-finals.
Bigrigg advanced to the consolation semis with a 2-1 performance on Saturday. The 197-class' fifth seed, he lost his first match of the day to fourth-seeded Mike Faust of Penn, 7-3. Bigrigg, though, defeated Matt Fisher of Princeton (Dec., 4:29) and No. 8 Jon Paxton of Army (7-4) to advance to Sunday's competition. Bigrigg will take on second-seeded Nick Ciarcia of Brown tomorrow in the consolation semis.
Lazzo also lost his second match of the day, falling to second-seeded Chris Vitale of Lehigh (11-3). After falls against Bucknell's Mike Saunders (2:59) and Brown's Sean Jenkins, Lazzo earned the right to compete in the consolation semis against Pat O'Donnell of Harvard.
Third-seeded Kovach defeated No. 6 Joe Looke of Princeton, 9-2, before dropping a match to second-seeded Dawid Rechul of Harvard, 6-3. Kovach will look to advance to the third-place match with a victory over fifth-seeded Shawn Laughlin of Lehigh tomorrow.
