The Navy men's and women's track & field teams will look to score high marks against some of the nation's top talent Thursday through Saturday when it travels to Franklin Field in Philadelphia to compete in the prestigious Penn Relay Carnival.
The men's team (6-1) will send seven relay teams and as many as 10 competitors to Philadelphia. The Mids saw their undefeated dual meet season come to an end last Saturday as they fell to arch-rival Army, 114-89. Team captain Tom Delaney (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the pole vault with a leap of 15'9". The senior will be competing in his hometown this weekend and, with his season-high vault of 17'3" ranking among the nation's top-20 competitors, he will have added motivation to turn in a strong showing.
A quartet of Mids will attempt to make their mark on one of track and field's top stages when Erik Schmidt (So./Spokane, Wash.), Eric Porter (So./Brookville, Md.), Doug Kay (Sr./Amherst, Va.) and Aaron Lanzel (Jr./Sugar Grove, Pa.) compete in the collegiate distance medley relay. The four runners ranked 17th in the nation during the indoor season, and kicked to a seventh-place finish (9:53.84) at the April 6 Texas Relays.
Schmidt and Lanzel will likely team up with Brian Harrington (Jr./San Diego, Calif.) and Ben Glaser (Fr./Des Moines, Iowa) to form Navy's 4 x Mile relay team. All but Glaser ran in the Mids' sixth-place effort (15:42.40) at the Texas Relays, and Ray Driscoll (Jr./Avenel, N.J.), who ran in Texas, can fill any gap that the Mids may have on a short-term notice.
Head coach Carla Criste's women's team (9-2) will send a pair of relay teams and two individual-event competitors to Franklin Field. Navy is coming off an 109-94 N-Star victory over Army last Saturday, where the Mids built up momentum to head into this weekend's competition.
Leading the way for Navy will be junior pole vaulter Amanda Hasenauer (Sebastian, Fla.). She broke her own school record for the second time this season against the Black Knights, clearing an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 12'10". Hasenauer will be one-of-12 vaulters who will battle it out for the Penn Relays championship at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Navy's only other individual competitor will be Shannon Crites (Jr./Powell, Ohio). She set the school record in the high jump (5'7") at the outdoor season-opening Point Loma (Calif.) Invitational March 16, and will look to break that record against the nation's elite competition at 12 Noon Thursday.
Freshman sensation Tineisha Davis (Madisonville, Ky.), who owns three school records (indoor 200m dash, indoor and outdoor 400m dash) in her rookie season, will anchor a pair of relays for the Mids this weekend. She will team up with Danielle Yambao (Jr./Cerritos, Calif.), indoor track captain Laura Zarcaro (Sr./Houston, Texas) and Katie Scotidas (Fr./Massapequa, N.Y.) in the 4x100m relay Thursday afternoon (12:40 p.m.). Davis will compete later on with Kacee Jossis (So./Boise, Idaho), Eva Tukarski (Fr./Crofton, Md.) and outdoor track team captain Jessica Crocker (Sr./White Lake, Mich.) in the 4x400m relay (Thursday, 5:05 p.m.).
