Women's Basketball Team Banquet Held

The Navy women's basketball team held its annual season-ending banquet Sunday night at Hubbard Hall.
In addition to several individual awards presented during the evening, Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. John Ryan, USN, Navy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk, and women's basketball head coach Joe Sanchez each took time in their remarks to recognize the two senior members of the squad -- Elaine Jensen (Sr., Coarsegold, Calif.) and team captain Kristen Kavanaugh (Sr., Ironton, Ohio) -- for their contributions to the women's basketball team and to the Naval Academy.
Jensen will be a surface warfare officer aboard the USS Wasp, while Kavanaugh will soon enter the Marine Corps.
Courtney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) was recognized as the top free throw shooter on the team for the second-straight season. Davidson converted 122 of her 136 free throw attempts this season to set a new Navy and Patriot League single-season record with a mark of 89.7 percent, a total which also ranked eighth in the nation. Davidson holds the Navy career record of 84.5 percent.
Bryanna Herring (So., Columbia, Md.) was honored as the top rebounder on the squad. Herring led Navy and ranked seventh in the league with 186 rebounds, a 6.6 rebounds-per-game average. She ranked first in the Patriot League with 107 offensive rebounds, hauling in 18 more offensive boards than anyone else in the league. In addition, Herring set a Navy sophomore class record with 36 blocked shots.
Abi Campbell (Fr., Richmond, Va.) was tabbed as the most improved player on the team. After totaling just two points, two rebounds and 14 minutes played through the first quarter of the season, Campbell averaged five points, three rebounds and 17 minutes played a game through the remainder of the season. She scored 10 or more points in three games on the year, including a career-high 13 points on a pair of occasions.
Lisa Steinmetz (Jr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) was named the team's Top Defensive Player. Steinmetz ranks 13th in Navy history with 96 career steals, and swiped multiple steals in five games this season. In addition, the point guard hauled in multiple defensive rebounds in 13 games this season.
Maile Shimoda (So., Orange, Calif.) was selected as Navy's Top Offensive Player this year. Shimoda ranked third on the team with 321 points and recorded a team-high 103 assists this year, the first 100-assist season by a Mid in eight years. She ranked sixth in the league in assists and 15th in scoring. Shimoda played over 1,000 minutes this year, the first Mid to do so since 1995.
Kavanaugh earned the Coaches Award this season. Kavanaugh was on the court for Navy's first practice of the 2001-02 season, less than eight months after undergoing ACL surgery on her right knee. She leaves Navy ranked 15th in the program's history for highest career three-point field goal percentage.
The final award of the evening -- the Adm. Charles R. Larson Award -- was awarded to Davidson as the team's most valuable player. After being named second-team all-league last season as a freshman, Davidson was named First-Team All-Patriot League this season. She totaled 478 points this year, the fifth-highest single-season total in Navy history, and joined Colleen Cassidy as the only two players to lead Navy in scoring as both a freshman and a sophomore. She set a new Navy sophomore class record with 64 three-point field goals made this season, and is ranked fourth in Navy history with 111 career three-point field goals.
In addition to leading the team in scoring this season, Davidson ranked second on the squad in rebounds, assists, steals and minutes played.
