Rutgers 48, Navy 27
New Brunswick, NJ (Sports Network) - Justin Hairston ran for 161 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries in leading the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to a 48-27 victory over the Navy Midshipmen in non-conference action from Rutgers Stadium.
Ryan Hart had a solid game for Rutgers (3-1), completing 14-of-21 pass attempts for 140 yards and an interception. Clarence Pittman added 75 rushing yards and a score on 14 attempts, while also completing his only pass attempt for a 15-yard touchdown.
Eric Roberts paced the Midshipmen (2-2) in defeat with 125 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. He also caught two balls for 70 yards and a score. Craig Candeto completed just 2-of-8 pass attempts for 47 yards, but did rush for 64 yards on 18 carries. Kyle Eckel added 104 rushing yards and a score on 18 attempts.
Navy opened the game's scoring with a 55-yard touchdown reception from Andy Michalowicz to Roberts just minutes into the contest.
Rutgers responded with a Chris Loomis 15-yard touchdown reception from Pittman late in the first quarter.
The Scarlet Knights then took their first lead of the game on a Hairston three-yard touchdown run early in the second period.
The Midshipmen quickly knotted the game at 14-14 when Roberts ran the ball into the end zone from 29 yards out.
Hairston then scampered for a two-yard touchdown, giving Rutgers a 21-14 lead at the break.
The Scarlet Knights struck early in the third quarter when Brandon Haw returned a blocked field goal 88 yards for a touchdown.
Navy responded with a one-yard touchdown run by Eckel, cutting the deficit to 28-21.
Hairston's four-yard touchdown run early in the fourth period extended Rutgers lead back to 14 points.
The Scarlet Knights made it 41-21 midway through the fourth quarter with a Hairston 10-yard touchdown run.
Trey Hines then scampered into the end zone from 20 yards out, cutting the Midshipmen's deficit to 41-27 because of a blocked extra point.
The Scarlet Knights closed out the scoring with a Pittman 24-yard touchdown run, giving them the 21-point victory.
Despite losing the game, Navy outgained Rutgers 490-404 in total offense, including 373-249 on the ground.
