Navy Wrestling Defeats Nebraska-Kearney at Lonestar Duals

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Navy wrestling team defeated Nebraska-Kearney, 30-3, but dropped two matches at the Lonestar Duals Saturday, falling to 21st-ranked Purdue, 24-14, and to 15th-ranked Oklahoma, 21-13. The Mids were scheduled to take on 24th-ranked Boise State but the Broncos were unable to make it to Texas and Nebraska-Kearney took the spot instead.

?The team wrestled pretty good overall,? Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. ?Technically, we made some mistakes but we competed hard and won several tight matches. Freshman John Cox and Brad Canterbury looked really good and the team just stepped it up a notch. We are building and still working towards the end of the year. It doesn't get an easier, so we're working hard to get better.?

Navy (4-3) won four matches in its opening matchup of the day against Purdue. Freshman Brad Canterbury scored a narrow 7-6 decision against Purdue's Sean Schmaltz in the 125-pound weight class. Cox continued his strong wrestling by posting a victory by technical fall against Dan Jankowski at 149 pounds, 21-4. In the 165-pound weight class, sophomore Deon Barrett pushed his winning streak to five with a 13-7 decision against John Deceault. Junior Thayer Paxton was also victorious winning at 197 pounds with an 11-8 victory against Nathan Moore.

Against the Sooners, heavyweight Tanner Garrett scored a 6-4 decision against Jake Hager, while team captain Mike Barikian posted a 5-2 victory against Randy Sulaver at 165 pounds. Senior Michael Carbonaro recorded a major decision against OU's Charles Jones in the 157-pound weight class. Paxton rounded out the Navy winners with a 7-4 victory against Austin David.

The Mids won nine of the 10 weight classes in their rout over Nebraska-Kearney. Sophomore Chris Miosi won his first match of the day, tallying a 14-8 decision against Trevor Charbonneau in the 133-pound weight class. Senior Andrew Hemminger got in the victory column with a 10-3 win over UNK's Caleb Young at 174 pounds, while Jon Kane majored Tervel Dlagnev, 13-2, in the 174-pound division. Also picking up victories for the Mids included Nate Gulosh (141 pounds), Gray, Cox, Carbonaro, Barikian and Garrett.

Navy returns to action next Saturday when the Mids travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers at 3 p.m.
