Rifle Opens Season With Win Over Akron
Matt Albright won both the smallbore and air rifle competitions in the victory over Akron. |
AKRON, Ohio -- The Navy rifle team outscored Akron in both the smallbore and air rifle competitions en route to its first win of the season, defeating the Zips 4,651-4,553. The Mids scored 2,313 in the smallbore and 2,338 in the air rifle, compared to Akron's 2,273 and 2,280, respectively.
?It wasn't a bad start, but not a great one either,? said head coach Bill Kelley. ?It was a typical first match. I would have liked to have seen us shoot at the level we have been shooting in practice. I'm pleased we won, but know there is level for improvement. We look forward to improving tomorrow.?
Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.) paced the Mids scoring 591 in both the smallbore and air rifle for a combined score of 1,182. Albright's scores were the best of the day for either team. Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M.), Kevin Wilson (Freeport, N.Y.) and Chris Scheider (Fort Mill, S.C.) all had scores count for the Mids in the smallbore competition. Albright, Miller and Schneider were joined by Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C.) for scores in the air rifle competition.
?Albright shot well today, and the rest of the team shot fair,? said Kelley. ?Tomorrow should be much better. We will be more relaxed and should have an improved score.?
The Mids will battle West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va., tomorrow, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
