Mids Drop West Virginia in Second Match of Season
Ryan Miller tallied a strong score in smallbore to help Navy top West Virginia. |
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- The Navy rifle team showed improvement from its season opener and easily defeated West Virginia, 4,650 - 4,559, on Sunday morning. With the victory, Navy improves to 2-0 on the young season. It was the season opener and first match in two years for West Virginia.
"Our performance was better today," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "But it still wasn't up to the level that we have been shooting in practice. We just need to relax and become more consistent."
Navy scored a 2,317 in smallbore, topping the Mountaineers' 2,267. The Mids then scored a 2,333 to West Virginia's 2,292 in the air rifle competition. Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.) again took home top honors with a combined score of 1,181, scoring a 592 in smallbore and 589 in air rifle. Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M.), Ryan Miller (Alliance, Neb.) and Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C.) all had scores count for the Mids in smallbore, while Albright, Mike Miller and Scheider were joined by Kevin Wilson (Freeport, N.Y.) in the air rifle competition.
Kelley said it was an honor to compete against West Virginia for the Mountaineers' season opener.
"It was a real privilege for us to compete against West Virginia in its season opener," said Kelley. "They have won 13 national championships, discontinued the program last season and started it back up again this year. It was its first match since their resurrection and we were honored to be its opponent. They are a rebuilding program and they will get back to the level they have reached in the past in a couple of years."
Navy will be in action next on October 30, at Norwich in Northfield, Vt. Action gets underway at 8:00 a.m.
