Volleyball Falls on First Match of Road Trip

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Slow starts in games one and two hindered the Navy volleyball team as the Midshipmen fell in four games to Bucknell, Friday night in Davis Gym in Lewisburg, Pa. The Midshipmen (12-5, 1-3 Patriot League) fell to the Bison (9-6, 3-1), 30-20, 30-26, 21-30, 30-23.
?We let Bucknell jump on us at the start of the first two games,? said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. ?Some was their doing, some was our doing. We spent the rest of the night playing catch-up, something you cannot do against a good team on the road.?
The Bison scored the first four points of the match and soon took an 8-2 lead over the Mids. After Navy made it 8-6, the Bison scored three-straight points to jump in front, 12-6. The two teams played sideout volleyball over the next few points, then, with Navy trailing, 17-14, the Bison scored seven of the next nine points to take a 24-16 lead.
The Mids committed 11 service errors, allowed eight service aces, committed four blocking errors and three ball handling errors in the opening game.
Game two saw the Bison quickly take a 10-3 lead before the Mids closed to 10-7. Bucknell held roughly a 5-7 point lead for the remainder of the game to take a 2-0 lead in games.
With Bucknell holding a 10-9 lead in game three, the Mids finally started clicking on offense and defense and burst open the game with an 8-1 run. The Mids never led by fewer than five points over the remainder of the game.
Navy again started off well in game four, taking leads of 9-4 and 11-7 before Bucknell knotted things up at 13-13. The teams traded points until Navy held an 18-17 lead. The Bison put away the game and the match with a 4-0 and 12-2 run.
After being their own worst enemy in game one, Navy settled down over the rest of the match, committing only three service errors, one blocking error and two ball handling errors and allowing one ace over the last three games.
The Bison outhit Navy in the match, .193-.166, thanks to totaling 62 digs to Navy's 48. The Mids did outblock the Bison on the night, 15-10.
Individually, Navy's Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Sr., Breckenridge, Colo.) led all players with 19 kills, while the Bison were led by 14 from Jackie Leahy and 12 kills to go along with a .409 hitting percentage from Courtney Clark.
The Mids will stay on the road Saturday for a 7 p.m. match at Colgate.
