Volleyball Sweeps Key Road League Match
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Navy volleyball team outhit Colgate by 200 points in a three-game sweep of the Raiders, Saturday night in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids (13-5, 2-3 Patriot League) defeated the Raiders (4-11, 1-4), 30-22, 30-25, 31-29 at Cotterell Court.
"It was a great road win," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "Every game we had different people step up and make big plays. One game it was our outsides, then our middles, then our passers. A great team victory."
The Mids jumped on the Raiders right at the start of game one, sprinting out to a 6-1 lead and never leading by less than three points over the remainder of the game. Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Sr., Breckenridge, Colo.) tallied five kills on 10 attempts in the game, with team captain Katey Geary (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) adding four kills. Navy hit .412 in the opening game, while Colgate hit a negative .023 percentage.
Game two was close through the opening half of the game. After a Colgate sideout tied the score at 16-16, the Mids scored five-straight points to take a 21-16 lead. After Colgate scored back-to-back points, Navy went on another 5-0 run to provide enough of a cushion for the win.
Van Hartesvelt again was the top offensive threat for the Mids as she tallied eight kills on 12 swings.
Colgate went on a 7-0 run late in game three to take a 20-15 lead, but the Mids answered back with a 4-0 run to close to within 20-19. Colgate scored five of the next seven points to jump in front, 25-21, but four-straight points by Navy tied the score again. After a Colgate sideout, Navy scored three-straight points then, after a Colgate sideout, Navy answered back with another point to reach match points at 29-27. Two hitting errors by Navy knotted the score at 29-29, but Navy converted back-to-back points to seal the win.
Amanda McHenry (Sr., Cary, N.C.) tallied six kills and zero errors on nine attempts to lead the Navy attack in game three.
Navy hit .286 on the night, while holding Colgate to a .087 percentage. Van Hartesvelt led Navy with 14 kills, while middle blocker Beth McArthur (So., Roseville, Minn.) hauled in a team-high 14 digs.
The Mids will be back in action next weekened with a Friday match at Lehigh and a Saturday contest at Lafayette.
