Women's Basketball Falls in Opener
SAN LUIS OBIOSPO, Calif. - The Navy women's basketball team shot 32-percent from the field and committed 30 turnovers in a 72-65 loss to Cal Poly, Friday night in the season opener for both teams in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
"We couldn't handle their pressure," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "They forced us out of everything we wanted to do."
A 13-0 lead early in the game gave Navy a 15-5 lead, then the Mids soon built their advantage to 22-9 before entering halftime holding a 33-30 lead.
Navy increased its lead to 42-34 early in the second half, but the Mustangs went on a 25-4 over the next eight minutes to take a 59-46 lead with 8:37 left to play.
Abi Campbell (Sr., Richmond, Va.) led the Mids with 18 points, Carly Meyer (So., Orlando, Fla.) scored a career-high 14 points and Nikki Curtis (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Navy will continue its season-opening trip to the West Coast with a Sunday afternoon game at Califonia. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. EST in Haas, Pavilion.
