Navy Women's Basketball Falls to 0-2
BERKELEY, Calif. - California shot over 50-percent from the floor, sank eight three-point field goals and forced Navy into 29 turnovers in defeating the Midshipmen, 87-55, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
In addition to converting 31-of-59 attempts from the field (52.5-percent) and 17-of-24 free throw attempts (70.8-percent), the Golden Bears held the Mids to 41.5-percent shooting from the field (22-of-53) and limited Navy to only 11 free throw attempts on the day. California also outrebounded the Mids by 10 -- 37-27 -- and recorded 12 steals to Navy's six.
The Mids went into halftime trailing by only 11 points at 37-26 after outshooting the Golden Bears from the field, 52 to 48-percent. Cal made only one more field goal than Navy did through the opening 20 minutes, but also made a trio of three-point field goals and six free throws, while Navy did not attempt either a free throw or three-pointer during the first half. The Mids also turned the ball over 17 times in the half, five more times than Cal did.
An Ashley Pelzek (Jr., East Longmeadow, Mass.) three-point field goal on Navy's opening possession of the second half cut the deficit to eight points at 37-29, but Cal quickly went on a 12-2 run to seize further control of the game.
"There were some great bright spots today," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "We played about as well as we can during several stretches, but we can't lose our focus which allow teams to go on big runs against us."
Navy was led offensively by Carly Meyer (So., Orlando, Fla.), who tallied a career-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, and by Pelzek, who finished with 12 points. Eleven of the 12 players who appeared in the game for Cal scored at least two points, with Kristin Iwanaga's 15 points leading the Golden Bears.
The Mids, 0-2 on the season, will play host to Troy in Navy's home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
