Women's Basketball Falls at UMBC 59-46

Baltimore, Md. - Brittnie Hughes scored a game-high 15 points to lead UMBC to a 59-46 win over Navy Wednesday at the RAC.
Matea Pender chipped in 11 points for the Retrievers, who won their third straight to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Sophomore center Kate Hobbs (Wexford, Pa.) also netted a game-high 15 points for the Midshipmen as they fell to 1-3. Senior forward Nikki Curtis (Jacksonville, Fla.) added 13 points for Navy, while sophomore forward Carly Meyer (Orlando, Fla.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and handed out three assists.
The Mids held a 30-29 lead early in the second half, but UMBC responded by scoring 16 of the next 18 points to grab a 45-32 advantage with 10:47 to go in the game. The run was keyed by a pair of three-pointers from Heather Luttrell and another trey from Courtney Doughman.
UMBC led by double digits the rest of the way, as Navy would not get closer than 10 points.
The Retrievers shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the field in the second half, including 50 percent (5-of-10) from three-point range. Navy was just 7-of-23 (30 percent) shooting in the second 20 minutes.
Both teams exchanged the lead 10 times in the opening 20 minutes.
UMBC led 20-14 with 7:50 remaining until halftime, but the Mids answered with a 7-0 run, sparked by an Ashley Pelzek (East Longmeadow, Mass.) three-pointer, to go up by one with a little more than five minutes left.
Navy was up 27-24 with under a minute to go in the half, but Hughes hit a three from the left wing to tie the game at intermission.
The loss snapped Navy's three-game winning streak over UMBC.
