Mids Ready for NCAA Qualifier

Freshman Chris Schneider will try to help Navy qualify for the NCAA Championship.

Annapolis, Md. -- Navy rifle will compete Saturday in the NCAA Qualifying match, as the Mids and John Jay will both shoot at Bancroft Rifle Range at 8 a.m. Every Division I rifle program in the country will shoot this weekend and the top-eight schools in each event will qualify for the NCAA Championship on March 11-13, in Murray, Ky.

?Our goal is to finish in the top-three,? said head coach Bill Kelley. ?Our team has put forth a lot of effort and a great attitude in the last few weeks. They work together and support each other. They're ready, but now they have to go in on Saturday and do what they've been doing.?

The Mids have broken numerous records this season, including a team effort against Nebraska that resulted in a new Academy aggregate record (6207). On Jan. 24, the Mids defeated the Huskers in Palmyra, Pa., with a 4654 in the smallbore and a 1553 in the air rifle. Junior Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn./Christian Heritage School) led the squad with an 1180 and a 393 in smallbore and air, respectively. Rounding out the smallbore team were junior Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado), who tabbed an 1167, team captain Marta Jung (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen), who posted an 1154, and freshman Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill), who chalked up an 1153. In air rifle, Schneider added a 390, Jung a 386 and freshman Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) a 384.

Team scores in smallbore and air rifle will be compared and the top-eight teams in each event will compete at the NCAA Championship. Only teams that qualify both disciplines will be in the running for the NCAA team title.
