Annapolis, Md. -- Navy rifle continued to build on the success of the 2003-04 season today as the Mids shot a 6220 at the NCAA Qualifier today in the Bancroft Rifle Range. Freshman Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) posted a 398 in air rifle blasted the school record, as Academy records dropped in both disciplines. The previous Navy record for 40 shots in air rifle was 395 by John Campbell, which he shot twice during the 1992-93 campaign. Bergman's record today will likely place her atop the collegiate sectional results.
?Sarah has worked like a champ,? noted head coach Bill Kelley. ?She has been shooting well all week and came in today and did her job.?
Junior Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn./Christian Heritage School) broke his own record of 1183 in smallbore by shooting an 1184 today, while the team total of 4658 surpassed the record they had just set on Jan. 25 against Nebraska. Navy's team aggregate of 6220 also topped the old record of 6207, also set against the Huskers in January.
In smallbore, junior Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) posted an 1172 while freshman Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) tabbed an 1159 and team captain Mart Jung (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) rounded out the squad with an 1143. In air rifle, Albright scored a 393, while Miller added a 388 and Jung posted a 383 as the Mids posted a 1562, just two points shy of the school record.
?Overall, it was a good day,? added Kelley. ?We shot well.?
John Jay and SUNY-Maritime also competed, with John Jay shooting a 3876 in smallbore and a 1373 in air rifle and SUNY-Maritime scoring a 784 in air rifle with a three-man team.
Navy will wait as the scores from around the country are collected. The top-eight scores in smallbore and air rifle from around the country will determine the NCAA qualifiers for the championship on March 11-13, in Murray, Ky.
