Navy Rifle Heads to NCAA Championship
Junior Matt Albright will lead the Mids as they gun for the NCAA title. |
Annapolis, Md. -- The Navy rifle squad will compete this weekend at the 2004 NCAA Championship in Murray, Ky. The Mids are sending full four-man squads to compete in both air rifle and smallbore and are therefore in the hunt for the overall team title.
The Mids had a very impressive qualifier on Feb. 14, where freshman Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) posted a 398 in air rifle to blast the school record and junior Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn./Christian Heritage School) broke his own record in smallbore by shooting an 1184. The team also set new records with a smallbore total of 4658 and an aggregate score of 6220. The scores not only earned both squads berths to nationals, but freshman Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) also earned an individual spot in air rifle after shooting a 393.
Albright, team captain Marta Jung (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) and junior Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) all return to the NCAA Championship for the third-straight year and will each shoot on both the air rifle and smallbore teams. Last year, Albright earned All-America honors in both disciplines.
Bergman and Schneider will make their first NCAA appearances, rounding out the air rifle and smallbore squads, respectively.
?We know what we can do,? commented head coach Bill Kelley before the team left the Annapolis, ?and we know what other people can do. We'll just have to go there and see what we shoot. Now it's just about getting there and seeing what the scores are when they're posted. Then we'll know how we did.?
Thursday will be a practice day for the teams. The individual competition will be held on Friday, and the team competition will be held on Saturday.
