Navy Rifle Wins MAC Title
Matt Albright tied the range record in winning the smallbore for the Mids |
In its final competition prior to next week's NCAA Championship, the Navy rifle team won the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship, Saturday in Cambridge, Mass. The Mids totaled a 2,313 to defeat Akron in the smallbore, then scored a 1,555 to hold off Norwich in the air rifle.
"We had some good performances today, but in comparing to where we want to be we are not satisfied with today's results," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We were a little under where we have been in the air rifle, and were significantly lower from our goals in the smallbore.
"We have some work to do before next week's NCAA Championship, so we will use this to motivate us to improve."
Matt Albright (Jr., Shelton, Conn.) was the top shooter in the smallbore event at the championship, totaling a 590 to tie the range record set in 1976 by Army marksman Ray Carter. Mike Miller (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) totaled a 580 in the smallbore for Navy, with Marta Jung (Sr., Reno, Nev.) scoring a 572 and Chris Schneider Fr., Fort Mill, S.C.) tallying a 571.
Jung also had a strong day in the air rifle, leading all competitors with a 392. All of the Mids had good performances in the event, with Jung finishing only four points in front of Sarah Bergman (Fr., Fort Mill, S.C.) and five ahead of both Albright and Miller.
Each of Navy's team scores also broke range records, besting the team smallbore record of 2,303 set by Navy in 1996 and the team air rifle score of 1,540 set by Norwich in 1999.
