Van Hartesvelt Receives Weekly League Honor
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy senior outside hitter Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Breckenridge, Colo.), who helped sparked Navy to one of the best starts to a season in school history, has been selected as this week's Baden Patriot League Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Through the opening seven matches of the season, Van Hartesvelt is averaging 4.69 kills, 3.12 digs and 0.92 aces per game while totaling a .389 hitting percentage. She has posted 10 or more kills in five matches, 20 or more kills in three matches, 10 or more digs in five matches and four double-doubles. Van Hartesvelt leads the Patriot League in kills, aces and hitting percentage.
Van Hartesvelt was named to the all-tournament team at both the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggie Classic (Sept. 3-4) and the Navy-hosted Armed Forces Tournament (Sept. 10-11). During the four-match tournament in North Carolina she averaged 4.80 kills and 2.73 digs per game, while hitting .402. On day two of the tournament alone Van Hartesvelt knocked down 49 kills, hauled in 20 digs and hit .500. During last week's tournament in Annapolis, she led all players with 45 kills while hitting .445, grabbed 28 digs and recorded a pair of double-doubles.
With a season-high 26 kills last Friday against The Citadel, she surpassed Katie Schullian (1991-94, 1,087 kills) for third place on Navy's all-time kills list during the program's Division I era. Van Hartesvelt has totaled 1,129-career kills and trails only Jen Williams (1996-99, 1,373) and Rachel Shropa (1996-99, 1,577) on the list.
Navy enters the week with a 6-1 record and will play Tuesday at Coppin State and then Friday and Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson, Rider and La Salle at the Cranberry Classic in Lawrenceville, N.J. The 6-0 start by the Mids is the best start for the team since Navy moved to the Division I level in 1991.

Navy will next be in action Tuesday night when the Mids travel to Baltimore to face Coppin State in a 7 p.m. match. The Mids will then participate in this weekend's Cranberry Classic, hosted by Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. Navy will take on Fairleigh Dickinson Friday followed by Saturday matches against Rider and La Salle.
