ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team swept a pair of matches Friday at the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C., to move to 3-0 on the young season. The Midshipmen defeated Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, 30-21, 30-20, 30-28, as well as Savannah State, 30-17, 30-24, 30-16.

Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Sr., Breckenridge, Colo.) tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs and added a trio of service aces in Navy's victory over the Islanders. Beth McArthur (So., Roseville, Minn.) added eight kills and recorded a .250 hitting percentage in the match, while Ashley Musser (Jr., Industry, Pa.) totaled 29 assists.

The Mids outblocked the Islanders, 9-4, and hit .233 as a team while limiting the Islanders to a .032 hitting percentage.

"It was a very similar match to our season opener against Saint Francis (Pa.)," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob of the win over the Islanders. "The first half of the match was very tight, but our defense really sparked us in the middle of the games and gave us a cushion. It was a very scrappy team we faced and we were pleased to come away with the hard-fought victory."

Navy totaled 15 service aces and outblocked Savannah State 16-1 in the second match of the day for the Mids. Van Hartesvelt tallied nine kills, three aces and a .261 hitting percentage to again pace the Mids. Megan Boyd (So., Richmond, Va.) was second on the Navy team with five kills and a .250 attack percentage, with Jacqui Ludeman (Fr., Oxford, Mich.) also providing a spark off the bench with four kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Kim Koss (So., Clarence Center, N.Y.) set for the Mids in the match and totaled 15 assists.

"Everyone saw action in our second match of the day and everyone contributed when they were on the floor," said Schwob. "It was nice to see us remain focused after our first win of the day and come out strong right from the start of the second match."

Navy will close play in North Carolina Saturday with an 8 a.m. match against the tournament-host Lady Aggies and a 12 noon contest against Campbell.
