Volleyball Wins Lady Aggie Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Behind Ashley Van Hartesvelt's (Sr., Breckenridge, Colo.) combined 49 kills, the Navy volleyball team won a pair of matches on day two of the Lady Aggie Classic, Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Navy's wins over tournament-host North Carolina A&T in four games and Campbell in five games gave the Mids the overall tournament title with a 4-0 record and raised Navy's season mark to 5-0.
In Navy's 30-19, 30-20, 25-30, 30-18 victory over the host Lady Eagles (2-1), Van Hartesvelt posted her second double-double of the weekend with 25 kills and 10 digs, while totaling a .500 hitting percentage. Other offensive standouts for Navy were team captain Katey Geary (San Jose, Calif.) and Rachel Dougherty (Fr., Derwood, Md.) with eight kills apiece and Beth McArthur (So., Roseville, Minn.) with six kills and three service aces. Ashley Musser (Jr., Industry, Pa.) successfully worked the ball around to different hitters to finish with 40 assists.
"We played well throughout the match," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "The difference in the third game was that we did not take advantage of opportunities to score points with our defense."
The Mids closed the weekend with a 24-30, 30-17, 30-23, 22-30, 15-9 victory over the Camels. Van Hartesvelt totaled 24 kills, a .487 hitting percentage and five service aces. Offensively, Diane Sheldon (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Amanda McHenry (Sr., Cary, N.C.) each tallied eight kills in the five-game victory, with Megan Vehovic (Jr., Clymer, Pa.) hauling in 12 digs to lead the Navy defense.
Van Hartesvelt and Musser, who totaled 52 assists against Campbell, were both named to the all-tournament team.
"It was a good weekend for us with many positive learning experiences," said Schwob. "Being able to win on the road is key to the success of any team. We also played at a fairly high level throughout the weekend, and when we did struggle a bit we were able to bounce back right away."
Navy will return to action Sept. 10-11 as the Mids play host to the All-Armed Forces Tournament in Macdonough Hall. Friday's action features Army facing Air Force at 4 p.m., followed by Navy against The Citadel at 7 p.m. Saturday will see Army taking on The Citadel at 4 p.m., with the Navy-Air Force match closing the weekend at 7 p.m. All matches are free.
