Navy Women's Basketball Team Loses At Delaware State

  • Box Score

DOVER, Del.-The Navy women's basketball team (4-7) made just two field goals over the final 16:32 as the Midshipmen lost to Delaware State (4-5), 50-43, Monday night at Memorial Hall in Dover. The win was the Hornets 23rd-straight at home, the third-longest winning streak in the country, while the loss was Navy's ninth-straight on the road.

"We missed some easy shots, but we also forced too many shots and had way too many turnovers," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "You have to give them some credit as well, they played pretty good defense."

Navy, which defeated Delaware State, 57-37, in the championship game of the Navy Classic just 12 days ago, committed 26 turnovers in the game while forcing just 10 miscues.

The Mids trailed 28-23 at the half as Navy managed to make just seven of its 24 first half shots (29 percent).

The second half started well for Navy as the Midshipmen made their first three shots. Kate Hobbs' layup and free throw at the 16:32 mark gave Navy a 31-30 lead. Remarkably, the Mids would make just one more field goal the rest of the game until Abi Campbell's layup at the buzzer as they committed 10 turnovers and made just two of its 10 shots.

Navy shot 30 percent from the floor (12-40), 18 percent from three-point range (2-11) and 85 percent (17-20) from the line for the game. Lauren Skrel led the Mids with 13 points and five rebounds.

Kate Hobbs added 10 points and five boards, while Carly Meyer scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Hornets won the game despite shooting 29 percent from the field (16-55) and 20 percent from three-point range (2-10). Delaware State did make 16 of 21 free throw attempts (76 percent). Navy won the battle of the boards, 42-30.

"Delaware State came out with much more energy and were more aggressive than we were tonight," said Marryott. "They had us on our heels from the start."

Navy plays at Radford on Wednesday night in a game that will be broadcast live on 1430 WNAV and on the internet at www.wnav.com
