Navy Game Notes
• After leading 14-10 at the half, Navy now owns a 17-2 record under head coach Paul Johnson when the Mids are leading at the half.
• Navy improved to 5-0 against Kent State after defeating the Golden Flashes, 34-31 ... with the win, the Midshipmen are now 12-2 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium over the last three seasons.
• Navy amassed 532 yards in its win over Kent State, 336 yards on the ground and 196 yards through the air ... it's the best output since last year's Rutgers contest (11-20) in which Navy produced 613 yards ... the 532 yards tie for the 23rd-best mark in school history (532 vs. William & Mary 10-22-77).
• Navy's 336-yard ground gain is the best this season (previously 326 vs. Duke) and just outside of Navy's all-time top-50 rushing games ... it's the most yards rushing by the Mids since last year's Rutgers contest in which Navy produced 476 yards on the ground.
• For the fifth-straight contest, the game has come down to the final possession.
• There was a 12-minute delay in the game with 4:34 remaining in the contest ... Kent State junior offensive lineman Nate Manning was taken off the field and transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center for observation.
• For the second-straight game, Navy wide receiver Jason Tomlinson topped the 100-yard receiving mark ... he posted 115 yards on five receptions ... he is the first Navy player to post back-to-back 100-yard receiving games since 1998 ... Ryad Read caught four passes for 112 yards and two TDs against Colgate and posted five receptions for 110 yards and a TD against Boston College.
• Rookie slot back Karlos Whittaker's 1-yard run at 1:17 in the third quarter marked the fourth-consecutive game in which he has scored a touchdown ... with the TD, he ties the school record for single-season touchdowns by a freshman (Alton Grizzard in 1987) ... last Navy player to produce rushing TDs in four-straight games was Kyle Eckel last season.
• Sophomore Adam Ballard gave Navy a 7-0 lead, scoring a four-yard TD run at 3:46 in the opening quarter ... it marks the first time this season Navy has scored first in the game.
• Gary Ham's interception at 7:15 in the first quarter marked the third-consecutive game in which Navy has thrown an interception on its opening drive ... Navy turned the ball over a season-high three times during the contest -- two interceptions and two fumbles ... it's the most turnovers since the Tulane contest in 2003 in which Navy turned the ball over four times ... for the fourth-straight game, Navy has turned the ball over twice or more.
• Sophomore safety Greg Sudderth picked off his second pass of the season with 12:41 remaining in the second quarter ... he also intercepted a pass in the season opener against Maryland.
• Junior quarterback Brian Hampton scored his first-collegiate touchdown on a two-yard run at 5:24 in the second quarter ... the scoring drive was 16 plays, 75 yards and 7:18 ... the 16-play scoring drive equals the longest drive of the season (Stanford and Air Force) and is the third time this season Navy has had a 16-play drive ... second-longest drive in terms of time of possession (longest 7:41 vs. Air Force).
• Kent State QB Michael Machen's 65-yard touchdown pass to Najah Pruden at 5:10 in the second quarter is the longest play by a Navy opponent this season.
• Sophomore cornerback Greg Thrasher picked off his first-career pass with 2:38 left in the third quarter ... he finished the game as Navy's leading tackler with a career-high nine ... owned 10-career tackles going into the contest.
• Freshman special teams player Eric Kettani recovered the Kent State fumble on the kick-off at 10:18 in the fourth quarter ... it was his first-carer fumble recovery.
• Team captain Jeremy Chase produced a season-best eight tackles ... it's the most since his eight-tackle performance last year against Notre Dame.
• For the third time this season, senior quarterback Lamar Owens has rushed for 100 yards ... he carried the ball 22 times for 110 yards and a TD against the Golden Flashes ... it's the 56th time a Navy quarterback has topped the 100-yard rushing mark ... for the second-straight game and the third time this season, Owens produced 100-plus yards through the air ... he posted 193 yards against Stanford, 171 yards last week against Air Force and 169 yards in today's win.
• Sophomore slot back Reggie Campbell caught two passes for a career-high 59 yards receiving which featured a career-long 44-yard reception.
• Sophomore fullback Adam Ballard ran the ball nine times for a career-best 55 yards ... heading into the contest, he had carried the ball 17 times for 52 yards.
• Junior QB Brian Hampton ran for a career-best 31 yards on eight carries, including a long of 12 yards.
