Navy Drops Third 1-0 League Setback

Oct. 21, 2005

Final Stats

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Navy women's soccer team totaled 17 shots and six corner kicks on the night, but failed to convert on any of its scoring opportunities in a 1-0 loss to Lehigh, Friday night in Bethlehem, Pa. The loss drops Navy's Patriot League record to 1-4-0 and its overall mark to 9-6-2, while the Mountain Hawks improved to 4-0-0 in league contests and 12-1-1 on the entire season.

The loss was Navy's third 1-0 setback in league play, with its additional league loss coming by a score of 2-0.

"We continue to play with heart and passion, but we're just not able to put the ball in the back of the net," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "Our advantage in scoring opportunities has not resulted in goals."

The game was scoreless until the 35th minute when Gina Lewandowski scored on a free kick after a yellow card was assessed to Navy's Lauren Griebel (So., Arlington Heights, Ill.). The tally came on the sixth and final shot of the first half by the Mountain Hawks.

Navy, which attempted three shots and two corner kicks in the first half, stepped up its offensive play in the second half. The Mids totaled 14 shots and four corner kicks after halftime, but were unable to put the ball past Lehigh goalkeeper Julie Kafka.

Kafka would total six saves on Navy's 17 shots in the contest, while Navy keeper Haley Crain (Sr., Friendswood, Texas) finished the night with a trio of saves on 12 Lehigh shots.

Sarah Hessinger (Sr., Oceanside, Calif.) led Navy with six shots in the game, one more than Meggie Curran (Jr., Silver Spring, Md.) finished with. Kristen Laraway (Fr., Long Valley, N.J.) was the lone Mid to place a pair of shots on goal.

The Midshipmen will remain in the Lehigh Valley through the weekend for a Sunday afternoon contest at Lafayette.
