LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore forward Krista Lee Gentile connected on her third goal of the game, a penalty kick in the 88th minute, to lead Bucknell past the Navy women's soccer team, 4-3, Friday night at the recently-dedicated West Field. The Bison win ended Navy's hopes of earning a postseason bid to play in the Patriot League Tournament, while Bucknell claimed the fourth seed in next weekend's league tournament.
Navy found itself down 2-0 after just 20 minutes of play, giving up goals to all-league forward Jennifer Margolis in the eighth minute and Gentile pocketed her first goal in the 19th minute, squeezing the ball just inside the left post.
Sandwiched between the goals, Navy midfielder Carmen Myers (Woodbridge, Va.) fired a shot which was tipped by Bucknell keeper Katie Dry and came off the crossbar. Navy was unable to capitalize on what was a ball up for grabs.
The Mids opened the second half a more determined team, knowing the game had playoff implications. Navy junior midfielder Molly Burd (Englewood, Colo.) put the Mids on the board just 3:34 into the second stanza, dumping in a goal on the left side off an assist by freshman forward Iris Boivin (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Navy's momentum was quickly silenced when Gentile was at the right place at the right time as Beth Darby's pass was deflected by a Navy defender and Gentile was able to knock in her goal a minute after the Mids' goal. Navy's players thought the Bison were offsides and stopped in the middle of the play.
Navy narrowed the lead to 3-2 when leading scorer Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) fed teammate Sarah Hessinger (Oceanside, Calif.) from the left side along the end line. Hessinger, open in front of the goal, was able to tap the ball in for the Mids.
Curran and Hessinger worked together once again to knot the score at three-all in the 78th minute when Hessinger scored from point blank range.
Navy had the opportunity to take the lead with 10:09 remaining in the contest as Curran had an open net shot in which she booted over the goal.
Gentile completed the hat trick when Navy defender Lauren Griebel (Arlington Heights, Ill.) was issued a yellow card and Gentile took the PK which rippled the lower left-hand side of the net.
Navy once again outshot its foe, turning in a 17-7 shots advantage, including 10-3 in the second half. The Bison were 4-for-4 on shots on goal, as Navy keepers Haley Crain (Friendswood, Texas) and Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) were unable to turn away Bucknell.
Curran's two assists gives her a share of the program's all-time assists lead, as she joins Stephanie Parker (2001-04) and Nadia Sheikh (1999-02) with 27 assists.
The Midshipmen get little relief as they close out the regular season Sunday with a 3 p.m. battle against top-ranked Penn State who defeated Minnesota 1-0 in double overtime on the road this evening.
