Navy Squash Splits in Doubleheader

Nov. 19, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Dartmouth stopped Navy's winning streak in squash at eight matches, as the Big Green defeated the Mids, 8-1, Saturday morning at the Bancroft Hall Squash Courts on the Yard of the United States Naval Academy. Navy, however, rebounded with a 9-0 sweep against visiting George Washington in the afternoon. The Mids now stand at 9-1 with just one remaining match before the holiday break.

Navy was paced in the Dartmouth match by senior captain Scott Hackman (McLean, Va.) who claimed the Mids' only win with a 7-9, 9-10, 9-7, 6-1 (def.) win at the No. 2 position over Todd Wood. Sophomore Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) pushed Dartmouth freshman Andrew Boumford to four games at the top slot, but George dropped the match. Fellow second-year player Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) also pushed his Dartmouth foe to four games. Sawin jumped out to a 9-5 victory in the opening game, but Hank Alexander won the final three games to claim the win.

"We had a great crowd for the Dartmouth match and great support from the brigade," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We played hard, but unfortunately it was not enough to turn the tide in our direction."

In the afternoon match, the Mids easily claimed the win over George Washington. Sophomore Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) turned in a 9-0, 9-4, 9-2 victory over Jarryd Commeford at the No. 6 spot, while senior Patrick Kruse (Annapolis, Md.) turned in a 9-3, 6-9, 9-3, 9-5 win over Alexander Popowich at No. 7. Hackman made it a sweep for the day, as he defeated Benjamin Hoefs, 9-4, 7-9, 9-5, 9-0.

The Midshipmen return to action Sunday when they play host to Penn State at 11 a.m. at the Bancroft Hall Squash Courts.
