BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Betsy Burnett (Jr., New Holstein, Wis.) scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed a pair of key rebounds in the closing seconds to help the Navy women's basketball team post a 52-48 victory over St. Francis, Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn, N.Y.
"We struggled on offense with a lot of our shots not falling, but we played hard and kept our heads and were able to come up with the win," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "I was proud of how hard we played today."
Navy held St. Francis without a field goal for the first five minutes of the game, but the Mids could take only a 6-1 lead. The Terriers took their first lead of the first half at 15-14 with 7:25 to play. After the score was tied at 16-16, Navy closed the first half on a 10-3 run to take a 26-19 into the locker rooms at intermission.
St. Francis began the second half on a 11-2 run as Navy missed eight of its first nine shots to take a 30-28 lead seven minutes into the second half. The Terriers held a slim lead for the next five minutes before the Mids went back in front 38-37 on a field goal from Lauren Nelson with 7:21 to play in the game.
The game was soon tied at 42-42 when Carly Meyer (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) score back-to-back field goals for Navy to put Navy in front 46-42 with 2:53 left to play. After a St. Francis field goal by Kristen Miah cut the Navy lead in half, Lauren Skrel (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) drilled a three-point field goal to give Navy a 49-44 advantage with 2:15 showing on the clock.
After Ashley Spriggs scored for the Terriers and Meyer missed a three-point attempt for the Mids, Nelson was fouled after grabbing a defensive rebound on the next Terrier possession. She connected on both free throws to give Navy a 51-46 lead with 1:18 showing on the clock. Tiffany Hill then made a layup for St. Francis 13 seconds later to make it a three-point game.
Navy struggled on its next possession, but retained the ball after it was knocked out of bounds with one second showing on the shot clock. Ashley Pelzek (Sr., East Longmeadow, Mass.) quickly launched an off-balance runner at the buzz which missed, but a diving Burnett grabbed the offensive board and allowed Navy to keep possession and run some more time off the clock. Skrel was soon fouled and missed the front end of the bonus with 23 seconds to play.
The Terriers would miss each of their three shots inside of 10 seconds to play, with Burnett grabbing another loose ball with six-tenths of a second left. She was fouled and made the second of two free throws to seal the victory.
In addition to her 13 points, Burnett led the Mids with six caroms in the game. Meyer would lead all Navy players with 14 points.
"Betsy has been playing well for us, so I am not surprised with her performance today," said Marryott.
Navy shot 42.3-percent from the field and held St. Francis to 34.5-percent shooting.
The Mids will be back in action Tuesday when Navy plays at Mount St. Mary's. That game starts at 7 p.m. and can be heard live on WNAV-AM 1430.
