Bucknell Outshoots Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Poor shooting in the second half led to a 65-58 loss for the Navy women's basketball team to Bucknell, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Midshipmen (8-16, 4-7 Patriot League) shot only 30-percent from the field and 50-percent from the foul line after halftime, while the Bison (9-15, 3-8 Patriot League) converted 46.4-percent of their shots from the field and 75-percent of their free throw attempts after intermission.
"We struggled to get into any kind of flow offensively," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "Bucknell was pressuring us on the perimeter and that led to several transition opportunities for them. It took us a while to stop that."
The Bison held a slim lead for most of the second half, but Navy was never able to put together a run to pull even with them. After the teams started the second half tied at 33-33, Navy soon scored back-to-back baskets to take a 40-39 advantage with 14:30 left on the clock. The Bison promptly scored six-straight points of their own and took a 45-40 lead one minute later, then took their largest lead of the game at 57-49 with 6:44 left on the clock.
The Mids pulled to within three points at both 57-54 with 4:51 to play and 60-57 with 2:30 remaining, but missed a pair of field goal attempts and 3-of-4 free throw attempts down the stretch.
The first half saw Navy open a 15-10 lead before Bucknell answered with a 15-4 run to take a 25-19 lead with just over seven minutes left in the half. Bucknell would take a six-point lead of 33-27 with 2:39 remaining in the half, but Navy closed the half on a 6-0 run to send the teams back to the locker rooms tied.
"I was happy with the effort today, but our execution needs to be better," said Marryott. "In a tough, close game we need to keep out heads on both ends of the floor and not lose focus. We lost focus too many times today."
Navy outrebounded Bucknell, 44-34, but turned the ball over 15 times while forcing only 11 Bucknell miscues. Navy also shot only 36.1-percent (22-of-61) from the field, 29.4-percent (5-of-17) from behind the three-point line and 56.3-percent (9-of16) from the charity stripe during the game. Conversely, Bucknell shot over 40-percent from the field, 55-percent from behind the three-point arc and 71-percent from the free throw line.
Navy was led by Lauren Skrel (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, Abi Campbell (Sr., Richmond, Va.) with 12 points and seven rebounds, Carly Meyer (So., Orlando, Fla.) scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds and Kate Hobbs (So., Wexford, Pa.) tallied 12 points and six caroms.
Bucknell was led by Lindsey Hollobaugh's 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Navy will return to action Saturday when the Mids play host to Lehigh in a 1 p.m. game in Alumni Hall.
