Army Defeats navy, 89-81, In Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y.-Army (12-10, 5-4) freshman Cara Enright scored an Army-Navy game record 34 points as the Black Knights defeated Navy (7-15, 3-6), 89-81, Sunday afternoon in front of 1,629 fans at Christl Arena. The victory gave Army a sweep of the series for the first time since 1993-94.
Navy was led by senior Abi Campbell who scored a career-high 26 points, making an Army-Navy game record eight three-pointers.
"In the first half we were a step behind defensively," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "Army is a very good offensive team and we didn't do a good enough job of paying attention to detail and doing the little things. In the second half our defense was better, but we seemed to be a step behind on the boards and got hurt by their offensive rebounding."
Army jumped out to a 22-9 lead to start the game and led by as many as 14 on two different occasions until an 8-0 Navy run over the final 1:46 cut the lead to six at 43-37 at the half. Campbell made her first two three-pointers of the game in the final 50 seconds of the half to spur the comeback.
The Mids cut the lead to four to start the second half on a Nikki Curtis bucket to make it 43-39, but Army went on an 11-3 run over the next five minutes to balloon the lead back to 12 at 54-42 with 14:15 left. Jen Hansen scored five of her 16 points during the run.
Navy answered with a run of its own as Campbell hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to six at 54-48 with 13:17 left.
The Mids, though, could never get any closer until a Campbell three-pointer cut the lead to five at 77-72 with 2:54 left. Navy got to five on two more occasions, the last with 1:25 left on a Kate Hobbs lay-up that made the score 81-76.
Enright grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with her 34 points, while Shavonne Holden scored 21 points and handed out five assists. Hansen had seven rebounds and six assists to supplement her 16 points. Linday Brent had boards and handed out five assists.
Army shot 52 percent from the floor (31-6) and 47 percent from behind the three-point arc (9-19). The Black Knights owned the boards, outrebounding Navy, 41-31, including a 13-10 margin on the offensive glass.
Besides Campbell's 26, Navy got 16 points and six rebounds from Carly Meyer, 14 points and 10 assists from Lauren Skrel and 11 points from Nikki Curtis. Kate Hobbs had nine points and six rebounds.
Navy was 26-62 from the floor (42 percent), including a scintillating 13-25 (52 percent) from behind the three-point arc. The 13 three-pointers is a record for an Army-Navy game and is the most three-pointers that Navy has made in a league contest. The 13 three's are also the second-most in school history. Navy shot well from the line, making 16 of his 18 free throws (89 percent).
The 89 points scored by Army was an Army-Navy game record, while the 170 combined points is the second-most points scored in an Army-Navy game and the most scored in a regulation contest (the record of 171 was set in 2003 when Navy beat Army, 86-85, in triple overtime).
Campbell's eight three-pointers was not only an Army-Navy game record but are also the most by a Navy player in a Patriot League contest and the second-most in school history.
