Tipping Off
Navy opens the Patriot League Tournament by facing American in a quarterfinal matchup Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Worcester, Mass. The Mids are the fifth seed in the tournament, while the Eagles are seeded fourth. The winner of the game will square off against the winner of Thursday's second game, No. 1 Holy Cross vs. No. 8 Lafayette, Saturday at 1 p.m. in the semifinals.

Navy Review
The Mids closed the regular season by splitting a pair of games, dropping a 68-58 decision at Lafayette and picking up a 49-46 victory over American.

Nikki Curtis tallied a career-high 28 points on 11-of-20 (55-percent) shooting from the field and 6-of-8 (75-percent) shooting from the foul line against the Leopards, but the remainder of the Navy team shot just 10-of-40 (25-percent) from the field, 5-of-19 (26.3-percent) from behind the three-point line and 5-of-8 (62.5-percent) from the foul line in the loss.

The Mids also allowed Lafayette to shoot 52-percent from the field and 60-percent from behind the three-point line during the second half.

Navy's defense came to the rescue three days later in the victory over the Eagles. Navy outscored American 10-0 over the final 8:40 of the game to squeak out the three-point victory on Navy's senior day. The Navy offense also struggled late in the game as the Mids did not attempt a shot from the field over the final five minutes. Navy won the game at the foul line, sinking 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch.

Curtis again paced the Navy offense with 16 points, Carly Meyer hauled in a game-high nine rebounds and Kate Hobbs set career highs with three blocked shots and five steals.


Tournament Seed Information
Navy posted a 6-8 record in the Patriot League season to earn the No. 5 seed in the eight-team field. The Mids tied with Colgate for fifth place, but Navy won the tiebreaker to receive the higher seed.

American Preview
American posted a 7-7 Patriot League record and a 12-15 mark on the entire season. The loss to Navy in the regular season finale ended a three-game winning streak for the Eagles.

American ended the league season ranked second in scoring defense at 58.5 points per game, but also ranked seventh in scoring offense at just 57.7 points per game. The Eagles ranked second in the league in rebounding (38.3 rpg), rebounds allowed (34.9 rpg) and rebound margin (+3.4).

Joanna Barnes led American in scoring during the season with a 13.7 points per game average (13.3 ppg in league games), while Jenyce Woodruff averaged a team-high 7.0 boards per game.


Navy vs. American Series
American holds a 13-9 lead in the all-time series with Navy, as well as a 5-4 lead (included one postseason meeting) since the Eagles joined the Patriot League in 2002.

Of the nine meetings between the schools over the last-four years, six have been determined by single digits and five have been decided by six points or less, including both games this year.

Navy swept the two regular season meetings with American this season for the first time.

Navy and American met last season for the first time in the postseason, with American recording an 85-73 victory over the Mids.

Navy vs. American -- 2005
The Mids picked up wins over the Eagles in both regular season games this year, posting a 70-64 victory in Washington, D.C., as well as a 49-46 win last Saturday in Annapolis.

Navy averaged 59.5 points a game against American, while the Eagles averaged 55.0 points a game against the Mids. Both teams shot over 40-percent from the field in the games (42.9%, Navy, 40.4%, American), while Navy made 12 three-pointers and American connected on six triples. Navy narrowly outrebounded the Eagles, 34.5-31.0 rpg, but American forced 41 Navy turnovers while tallying 33 miscues of their own.

Individually, Nikki Curtis shot 57.7-percent from the field and averaged 20.0 points per game to lead Navy, while Joanna Barnes averaged 18.5 points per game. The top shooter on either team was American's Damarah Rhymer, who made 11-of-13 field goal attempts to shoot 84.6-percent.

Navy was led in rebounding by Carly Meyer at 7.5 rebounds per game, just ahead of the 7.0 averaged by Curtis and Abi Campbell. Kim Salem hauled down 6.0 boards a game to lead the Eagles.

This marks the fifth time in Patriot League history that two teams both closed the regular season and opened the playoffs against each other. This is the third time Navy has been involved in such a scenario.

Holy Cross Preview
Top-seeded Holy Cross posted a 12-2 league record and a 17-10 mark on the entire season, but ended its season by splitting their final four games.

In conference play, Holy Cross led the league in scoring margin (9.2 ppg), field goal percentage (42.6%), free throw percentage (75.4%), field goal defense (37.9%) and three-point field goal defense (27.9%). On the entire season, Holy Cross ranked first in free throw percentage (74.4%), second in scoring margin (+2.8 ppg), field goal percentage (41.2%) and three-point field goal defense (29.9%), as well as third in field goal defense (39.6%).

Lisa Andrews, Maggie Fontana and Brittany Keil all scored in double figures and averaged over 5.0 rebounds a game on the season.


Navy vs. Holy Cross Series
Navy and Holy Cross never met until the Mids joined the Patriot League prior to the start of the 1992 league campaign. Since then, the Crusaders have recorded wins in 28 of the 32 meetings between the teams including each of the four league tournament games.

The Mids had gone winless in their first 15 games against the Crusaders in Worcester until coming away with a 71-64 victory during the 2004 season.

The last time Navy and Holy Cross faced each other in the playoffs was in the title game of the 1999 tournament (HC 72, Navy 58).

Navy vs. Holy Cross -- 2005
Holy Cross posted wins in both meetings with Navy this season, recording a 73-48 win at Alumni Hall and a 71-51 victory at the Hart Center.

The Crusaders averaged 72.0 points per game and shot 47.8-percent from the field against the Mids this season. Navy connected on one more three-pointer than Holy Cross did, 10-9, but both teams shot 29-percent from behind the arc. Holy Cross only outrebounded Navy by one rebound in the two games, 72-71, but tallied 11 blocks to Navy's two and forced 11 additional turnovers, 46-35.

Navy had very balanced scoring against Holy Cross this season, with Nikki Curtis averaging a team-high 12 points per game and both Lauren Skrel and Abi Campbell averaging 9.0 points per game. Those three players also led Navy in rebounding, with Curtis tops at 8.5 boards a game. Andrews and Fontana paced the Crusaders at 15.0 and 13.5 points per game, respectively, and both averaged 5.0 boards against the Mids.


Lafayette Preview
Lafayette enters the playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the tournament after posting a 3-11 league record. The Leopards were 5-22 on the entire year.

The Leopards ranked second in the league during conference games in free throw percentage (73.1%) and third in three-point field goal percentage (34.1%). Lafayette also ranked seventh in both scoring offense (57.7 ppg) and defense (64.9 ppg).

The statistical leaders for the Leopards were Lindsay Myers at 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, with Vanessa Van De Venter tallying a team-high 5.4 boards and a second-best 9.3 points per game.


Navy vs. Lafayette Series
The Navy-Lafayette series dates all the way back to the 1979-80 season, making it the longest running series in Navy history. The two teams have met 43 teams, the second-most games Navy has played against one opponent (44, Army).

Navy holds a 28-15 lead in the series against Lafayette, including a 3-0 advantage in Patriot League Tournament games. The last time the two teams met during the playoffs was in the semifinal round of the 1998 tournament in Alumni Hall (Navy 76, Lafayette 59).

Lafayette's victory over Navy one week ago ended a seven-game winning streak for the Mids.

Navy vs. Lafayette -- 2005
The home team prevailed in both meetings this season between Navy and Lafayette, with the Mids winning a 59-46 decision in Alumni Hall and the Leopards splitting the series with a 68-58 win at the Kirby Sports Center.

Navy narrowly outscored Lafayette in the two meetings, 58.5-57.0 points per game, but the Leopards held a slight rebounding advantage, 39.0-37.5 rebounds per game. Both teams shot roughly 36-percent from the field, but Navy converted only 24.2-percent of its three-point attempts while Lafayette shot 40-percent from behind the arc.

Nikki Curtis led all players in scoring at 20.5 points per game, with Brianne Welte averaging 11.0 points per game to lead the Leopards. Carly Meyer and Abi Campbell for Navy and Lafayette's Vanessa Van De Venter all averaged 7.0 rebounds a game.

Curtis Named Second-Team All-League
Navy senior forward Nikki Curtis was named Second-Team All-Patriot League, it was announced Tuesday by the league office. Curtis leads Navy in both scoring and rebounding this season and ranks among the league leaders in both categories.

She entered this season having totaled 137 points and 124 rebounds in her career, but has scored 349 points and hauled in 187 rebounds this season.

This is the first postseason honor Curtis has garnered from the league, and her award marks the ninth second-team accolade received by a Mid.

Academic Honors
The academic honors lists for the 2004 fall semester were recently announced and the Navy women's basketball team placed one player on both the Superintendent's and Dean's Lists.

Nikki Curtis made her second appearance on the Superintendent's List, while LaTesha Ford made her first appearance on the Dean's List.

An American politics and law major, Curtis recorded a 3.6 QPR during the first semester, while Ford, an information technology (national security affairs) major posted a 3.44 QPR.


Service Selections
Abi Campbell will become a surface warfare officer aboard the USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44), based out of Norfolk, Va., while LaTesha Ford will be assigned to the USS Germantown (LSD 42) out of San Diego. Both ships are in the Whidbey Island class of dock landing ships.

The third senior on the women's basketball team, Nikki Curtis, will begin flight school in October. Although her final assignment will not be made prior to her attending flight school, she currently hopes to fly helicopters.


Outside Shooting
The one area in which Navy has been fairly consistent in this season has been three-point shooting. Navy is averaging 5.5 three pointers a game on the year and 5.9 a game during the league season (both of which rank third in the Patriot League).

Navy's total of 148 triples on the year is fifth in Navy history, while its 83 three-pointers made during the league season ranks second.

Three-Point Streak
Navy has connected on at least one three-point field goal in 221-consecutive games. The last time the Mids were held without a three-pointer was Nov. 23, 1997, vs. Sacramento State.


Recent Three-Point Shooting
Navy averaged 8.6 three-point field goals made a game during a five-game stretch from F4-19, shooting 43.8-percent from behind the arc (43-of-98). Included in that stretch of games was 13 triples F6 at Army and 11 F11 vs. Colgate.

The Mids drastically cooled off from long range during its final-two games of the season against Lafayette and American. The Mids averaged only 4.5 three-pointers a game and connected on just 22.5-percent (9-of-40) of their three-point attempts.

While Navy was struggling from outside the three-point line, the Mids shot 47.5-percent (28-of-59) from inside the three-point line during their final two games.


Late Rally
Navy's victory Saturday against American marked the first time this season Navy has rallied from a deficit with under five minutes to play to win the game. The Mids had posted an 0-16 mark when tied or trailing with five minutes left in a game, before coming back from a 46-43 deficit with five minutes left Saturday against American.


Double-Double Update
There have been 52 double-doubles recorded by Patriot League players this season, with Navy ranking second with 11 of them.

Rare Double-Double
Of the 52 double-doubles in the league, only two included assists and both of those performance were by Navy's Lauren Skrel.

A double-double with assists has been achieved only 11 times in Navy's 28-year history. Skrel joins Margie Trott and Colleen Cassidy as the lone Mids to achieve the feat multiple times.

Lauren Skrel
Lauren Skrel totaled only 31 points and 19 assists during her first two seasons, but has tallied 233 points and 137 assists this year.

Skrel also ranks third on the team in shooting percentage (38.5-percent), first in three-point field goal percentage (44.8-percent) and leads the team in steals with 56.

She has dished out five or more assists in 14 games, scored seven or more points in 18 games and hauled in three or more rebounds in 16 games.

Skrel leads the Patriot League in assists per game (5.07 apg) and ranks second in assist/turnover ratio (1.73) During the league season, she ranks first in assists per game (4.64 apg), third in three-point field goal percentage (43.6%), and fourth in steals (56).

She has scored in double figures in six of the last eight games (J30-F26), averaging 11.1 points (89), 5.5 assists (44) and 3.6 rebounds (29) a game during this span.


Skrel Surpasses 100-Assist Mark

Abi Campbell/Ashley Pelzek
Abi Campbell and Ashley Pelzek have been Navy's top threats from behind the three-point line this season. Campbell has connected on multiple three-point field goals in 16 games, with Pelzek drilling at least a pair of three-pointers in 11 games.

Campbell's 50 three-pointers is tops on the team this year and is a new personal-best total, while Pelzek has made 41 triples, also a career best.

Campbell has drilled multiple three-point field goals in eight of her last-nine games and is shooting 42.5-percent (43-of-101) from the field and 44.1-percent (30-of-68) in three-point attempts and averaging 3.3 triples a game during this eight-game span.

Campbell ranks fifth all-time at Navy in career three-point field goals made, as well as second in triples made during league games, while Pelzek is tied for 11th in Navy history with 55-career treys.

Nikki Curtis
Nikki Curtis has scored in double figures in 14 of her last 15 games (J8-F26). She is averaging 14.8 points (222 total) and 7.6 rebounds a game (114 total) and shooting 50.2-percent from the field (86-of-171) during this span.

Included in this stretch of games are a pair of 20-point performances -- 24 points J12 at American and a career-high 28 points F23 at Lafayette -- as well as four double-doubles.

Curtis not only leads the Mids in scoring on the season at 12.9 points per game, she also is tops on the team with 6.9 rebounds a game.

She entered the year having totaled 137 points and 124 rebounds in her career, but has scored 349 points and hauled in 187 boards this season.
